A standard issue police motorbike used by 22 forces poses a "serious" threat to riders' lives, a coroner has said.

Dr James Adeley is to write to chief constables across England and Wales to warn them of a "catastrophic result" which can occur with the Honda model.

I remember there being a query over these bikes a while back, but thought that it had all been sorted out. It would appear not!

Pc Shreeve, 38, was travelling at about 110mph along the M58 motorway near Skelmersdale, Lancashire, on 9 November 2005 when he lost control.

doesnt say he was in persuit, so if he wasnt, silly plod.

id expect all the wieght on the rear would cause a tankslap, at high speeds with the aid of with wid pushing the front up.

Quote:
Tests showed that the unpredictable weave occurred when the bike travelled about 70mph or 80mph.

so it would be unsafe for them to give chase over that speed, sorted Very Happy

fit a steering damper.

or get rid of police bikes Wink

The Met has withdrawn all or most of its Pan Europeans and gone back to using BMWs - I heard about the problem a year or so ago...at the time they cited reliability problems but it was because the bike was unstable at speed.

I had presumed the only 'serious threat' in Merseyside were the locals...

I've a feeling there's been a thread on BCF about this nearer the time the accident happened actually. It rings a bell. I think a BCF member (police biker, but can't recall who) had something to say about it then.

The inquest was told that problems affected only police models of the motorcycle with their heavy emergency and communications equipment.

So you exceed the load rating you crash, pretty obvious.

Its only the ST1300 thats affected and it only affects police ones.
The ST1100 isn't affected, alot of forces have switched back to these.

It doesn't only effect the Police issue bikes, its been a subject for a number of years.
Any bikes that carry significant load can be upset. It is fact however that they have resorted to the old ST1100's though and the riders much prefer them by all accounts.

Johnny beat me to it. This forum really does have its fair share of thoughless twats. FFS, a biker died - doesnt matter if he was on a Police bike or not - have a bit of fucking respect.

And for the record, lots of non-police have reported the same issue with the bike.

I heard about Pan European problems about a year ago.
Pans are shite. Bike cops round here prefer BMWs.

It sounds similar to stories of police being forced to use high mileage cars in some police forces due to lack of funding.
Patrol vehicles exceed average mileage in their lifetime but some forces can't afford to replace them. The cars pass vehicle checks just.

After the investigation, all the bikes affected should have been removed from service.
Honda have some responsibility in this as do police authorities and police federation.
If what was said in the article is founded.

I will slag off police sometimes but someone being injured whilst doing their job is just not acceptable.

As is normally said after events such as these, the incident's publicity may prevent a repeat.

But that will not undo what's done.

To state my position on this it saddens me that the officer has died but this has been an ongoing problem with ALL manufacturers supplying the police with bikes for the last 20 years right back to the R80RS BMW.

Until the Police fully test equipment before issue it will continue to happen which saddenes me further.

Totally justified reaction there, Johnny. I have utmost respect for Bike Cops as I have had the pleasure of their services during various organised Toy/Easter Egg runs over the years. I hope the problem is solved quickly so you never have to lose a colleague that way again.

I'm in the job and I've lost colleagues in crashes. I was very close to leaving this site, but am glad to see the reaction from others.
It's the same as saying someone deserved to die because of the colour of their skin, we're all human and if you honestly think someone deserves to die because of their job (during which I've personally saved the lives of several other people) you have my pity....whoever the twat is that made the earlier post is a waste of skin and an oxygen thief.
