This is one thats been puzzling me for a while.

On the way up the a5 i had the pleasure of getting stuck behind a 5 bike convoy of BAB's happily rolling behind a car at about 40.
I sat and waited for them to make their move, they didnt.
Eventually an R1 came up from behind and carved me up, and i thought... yep thats about fair point. And so eventually got past all of them in a safe but authoritative manner.

Also had a ride the other day and encountered some guy plodding along desperately wanting to overtake but without the commitment (positioning was all wrong to see ahead). I waited for an inordinately long time, then had to blast past.

You feel like a cock, but had they been cars you wouldnt have even slowed down.
But they're bikes... they're capable of highly erratic maneavres, and they're obviously fellow bikers.

So i dislike dealing with them on rides at all.

Anyone had similar instances? Thoughts on the matter?
(sorry if that made no sense, not slept yet)

Had a Dt 125 which is clearly alot quicker than my CBR 125, but he was obviously new and inexperienced as he looked a bit wobbly, but i was in a rush. So saw my oppurtunity and went round him with plenty of space. Was on the A581 coming back from southport towards chorley. If anyone knows it, its quite a wide open road.

On the ZXR I had more than enough grunt to pull out and overtake most things, but rarely did as its not a race and maybe years of driving a car that makes you ride more conservatively?

Why "authoritative"?

are you superior to others who don't feel the need to go as fast as you at the time?

It shouldn't bother you how fast others ride, if they are happy pootling behind cars why is that a problem to you?

Hmmm from the other perspective; I was tootlin' up the B4215 to Newen' the other afternoon (15:00) and as I passed the Hartpury turning I noticed a biker behind a car waiting at the junction. Well I was in a 40 zone doing 41-43mph (digital speedo) and I was looking in my mirrors wondering if he'd joined the road and was going my way. Well he was and he meant to catch me, which was fine as there was no way I was gonna race as the police sit (hidden from view) on the High Leadon Texaco garage forecourt (nice people). Anyway he catches me up just as we enter the 50 zone, it's a bit winding and I don't want to be an obstacle so I move just left of centre and give him room to go by. Now I'm expecting at this point a fairly large sports bike, and as he pulls level (with no thanks by-the-way) I note it is a sportsbike but as he continues past and in front I can tell by the tone and smell that it's a 2-stroke, looked Suzuki 250'ish.

Still I think now he's in front can I keep up? well though I know the road well I'm new to the bike and I hope I can learn something. Well I kept up, in fact I didn't get out of 4th gear and after over-taking a few cars we topped out around 75mph. He over took a car before a double-white line and that left me stuck for a bit. Anyway I met him again at the lights I was going right, he was going straight on, I looked left, he ignored me, sat revving his bike..... as the lights changed he blatted away "AceBiker" stylie past the school in a 30 Zone! Eh?

This happens a lot on our rides. We've seen that the majority of bikers don't like being overtaking and this is shown by their road position i.e. it would be easy for them to move over slightly to acknowledge they have seen you and are expecting you to overtake.

IME it's best just to overtake them when safe - but it's good to make sure they have seen you in their mirrors before doing so.

I do feel a bit nervous overtaking bikes, as they are more likely to pull out on me. But I position myself so I can see their face in their mirror, and indicate to pull out after a while. But it still feels a bit unnatural and treacherous, especially when I did it to a Duke 748 the other day. Laughing

I meant i made it very clear what i was doing, so they didnt try and overtake through me.

I am all too happy for bikes to go slowly, if its a road i can overtake them wide enough to not worry. The a5 is tight twisty nirvana, id been managing an excellent pace up it. Id been on a motorway for 2 hours, and the a5 was my treat at the end.
Then low and behold, a group of slow riders, and moving about in their lane looking for overtakes etc in a completely erratic manner. Doing about 40.

As said i waited a long time but they were up for the slow poddle behind a vdub. But cos they moved about so much i could see it going badlly. Ergo authoritive is possibly the safe version of aggressive i guess. In the same way overtaking a car at 50 mph faster then they are moving is ALOT safer then 5 mph faster then they are going.

Crisp maneavres not allowing idiotic side swiping.

But im almost certain they thought i was an utter tosspot.
Thumbs Down

I get this a bit I just pull over to just right of the gutter, travel at a sensible 40-ish til they're past, giving them room and pace to get passed, then speed back up, and adjust position accordingly. Thumbs Up

If i get another bike come up behind me and i'm in no rush i will move to left and wave them past. Which to me is just common courtesy, just the same as i would do if i was driving my car.

But some riders do seem to make life hard for you when you want to push on, and they are happy to tootle along. You then have to make it very clear to them that you are comming past or sometimes they just pull out on you.... Just when you have nailed it...

Take your time, let them know you're there and about to overtake. Bunny-hop between up the line if there's a group of bikers. No drama, just be patient.

Ego at play. Sad

I want to progress down the road at a certain pace. And it's in the interests of my concentration to not have an obviously faster rider hovering in my mirrors. So I'm happy to do just what you say there to remove the distraction.

It doesn't cost me anything, and it'll improve both our rides.

As for overtaking those without the same attitude... Just dispatch them carefully and courteously and carry on with your ride. It ain't no thang. Smile

I don't mind finding slow bikers, I just pass them as if they were a car (obviously being more cautious as they might go for an overtake as I do)

What does annoy me is riders who insist on powering past me in a national zone, but then sit in traffic, making it slow for me - eventually I get past, then a bit up the road they pass again in the national zone. I know my bikes only a 2T 125 so I don't have the power of some bikes.. but you gotta be able to make good progress in the towns as well,..

Actually when I come upon a slower bike Im quite often happy just to pootle along behind them for a bit.
Just nice to be near another bike for a bit.
If Im in a hurry I will just cruise past though where possible.
Nothing stupid and with my intentions well marked before I make my move.

Sometime I stay behind because Im just not in the mood to sit at a set of lights and do the nice day for a ride thing.

I was on a rideout on my todd a few years ago on my RS125, i was flying along and caught up with some fellas on 600-1000cc sports bikes, now they were not going slow but not as fast as i had been going so as i approached i thought "fuck it" and flew past.. I expected them to give chase but they did not, i just left them in a cloud of 2 stroke Twisted Evil.

They were probably too busy laughing at your Lonsdale trainers and stick-on helmet ears.

Can be quite annoying, as said before when i come up behind a bike, i usually sit in either of their mirrors for an amount of time, try to make eye contact in the mirrors, if at this point they dont get the idea that i would like to pass, usually a gentle "im coming though" rev, indicate and go...

If someone comes barreling up behind me and im not up for iti will happily move over, and give them room to pass, if i am out for a pootle i dont want someone whos out for a hoon a meter from my back wheel, i dont understand why other bikers dont move over if they arent going for it.

Even more annoying are the ones that are "going for it" but are just so inadaquate, they wobble around, position themselves horribly for the over take. I usually, when clear pull right out almost to the opporsite verge of the road (again when clear and good visibility) and pass giving them far more room than they need just so they cant swipe me...

I move over slightly if a bike is behind me, as I know im definatly not one of the fastest (or a pretty good) riders yet.

All hail the A5!! Freshly laid tarmac, not a bump out of place, dual carriageway heaven and some nice roundabouts too! Though some of them could do with sweeping especially that one by the texaco garage!
