I've been riding my vfr400 since I passed my test in november and I'm bored of it so I'm thinking of getting either a 600 or 750, is there much difference in power between the vfr400 and say a cbr600 or zxr 750? and, is there much between a 600 and a 750?

Thanks,
Rob

I've recently traded down from a 750 in the same /class/ and im more of a hooligan on the 600 if im honest, bout 10bhp difference, although the 750 was 10kgs heavier.

Are we talking cbr-rr or cbr-f here?

Most 750 sports are oldish so against a newer 600 don't think you'l notice a great difference, the 750 will most likely have a better midrange and more torque.

Get which one takes yer fancy Wink

Would probably be a cbr-f, I'm working my way to newer bikes! my vfr is an '88, I'm looking for something mid '90s (hopefuly part-ex the vfr but nobody's interested so far!) then after that I'm hoping to be able to afford something at least late '90s, it's crap being skint all the time, having to sell one AND save up to afford another one!

Thanks,
Rob

I've ridden a ZXR 750 and several sports 600s. The sports 600s felt much quicker. Although I can't vouch for the mechanical wellbeing of this ZXR. (It dropped a valve on about the 4th lap).

The jump from a 400 will be pretty big though. Especially onto a modern 750, even a modern 600 could be putting out double the power.

A modern 600 (or 636) should murder a zx7r. That is all.

My mate's just traded in a VFR like yours Rob for a 'babyblade' CBR400 and is well impressed by the hike in horsepower. I've had a go on it and its a really good bike. Worth considering if you need an intermediate step before going to a bigger bike. It's capable of a powerslide if you ride it like the VFR - as he found out on the way home Very Happy

Frankly, I think most of the 400s are pretty much adept for everything except motorways.

Aside from that they are mostly pretty comfy, light and pretty darn flicky especially in traffic.

Definitely depends what kind of riding you want to do anyway. You might be better checking out other 400cc's, or maybe a different style bike altogether.

Mind you if you want a sports bike nothing I say will make a bit of difference. Laughing

edit: Figure that I will add, is your VFR restricted? I know a lot of the 400s, especially the imports from Japan had a restriction of some sort. In the speedo I believe.

Something in the region of 2/3rds more power (and more), more torque, faster acceleration, top speed, the whole shebang.

You should be quicker on a 600 pretty much everywhere - or so the theory goes. The 400s have a tendency to have more of their performance available to an average rider. I wasn't that much slower on my Blade A-B than on my RVF (but then I'm the kind of rider who sees little point in speeds above 125 or so...)

A bigger bike is nothing to be worried about - just go as fast as you want, throttle goes both ways...

I'm not so much worried about the extra power, just wondering what to expect! I'm wanting a bike thats bigger (in height) than the 400 because it feels a bit cramped

Its not restricted I dont think, after I put the kph to mph convertor on, but it's not so much about top speed either, just a bit more poke would do!

Thanks for the replies

Rob

Offtopic - interesting test in 'Bike' this month, where they take a range of bikes, from 400c single trailees to a Fireblade over their 42 mile road test circuit. Same riders etc, and whilst the Blade was quickest, over 42 miles it was only 2 minutes quicker than the slowest, proving that on real roads making progess really doesnt depend on the bike so much as the rider.

That could have been predicted though. I mean between a 400 and a thou on roads there's hardly any difference.

the big sports bikes come into their own after about 140mph or on the edge, knee down absolutely committed.

Neither of which you can safely do on the road.

Predictable test IMO. But I suppose whatever sells magazines.

Yes it will rip your arms out of their sockets Rolling Eyes

Just go and get on one and test ride, see what you think.

Thats the only way your gonna find out if you want one or not.

I was hooning around the other day on my Bandit 6, went around the outside of a CBR400 or a VFR400 (Cant tell the difference... rectangular rear light) on a roundabout and got back up to speed, i noticed while i was pulling from him i wasent leaving him at all, got to the next roundabout and realized he was game, so took that nice a neatly and got a good drive out again, on the next one i have wrongly assumed he has given up, so have broken for the roundabout with plenty of room to spare, gone round at a leisurely pace but started driving out down the straight pretty fast, only to see him just off my right side obviously wanting to get past...
I knock it down a gear and go go go, but because he had obviously started driving all the way from the roundabout exit, he had the legs on me... cheeky git on a 400 Razz... Anyway the road was lovely and straight (and for the purposes of anyone who is interested obveously private,....), We have gone neck and neck to 125/130, nothing in it at which point we were both flat out and looked over and exchanged grins Razz, i can see him and he looks like hes going absolutely flat out, chin on the tank kinda frantic last gear change, the kind when you know you have no power left on your last gear so getting it right could be the difference, i would say i was 95% percent of the way to flat out, wasent taking it to redline, but was by no means letting him by... anyway it was a photo finish to the next roundabout (i have this mate you see with massive private land, with roundabouts and the like Razz), He dident seem to be as confidant on the brakes, and at that roundabout we went our separate ways... Me being quite impressed at what them little 400's can do.

Now a bandit 6 is not comparable to a 636, and no doubt a kwaker woulda left us both there but i think you will enjoy whichever you get Smile
