Geez we need a Computing forum. cough cough KORN Theres been tons of computing questions in the last week or so.

What are your existing PC specs? as you may need to upgrade more than just m/board and cpu. also what are you looking to spend?

RD memory is not really used anymore.
If you're looking to go intel, there are 4 main types of CPU:
Celerons (socket 478s) (the cheapies)
P4, 400FSB (lower end clock speeds, 1.8Ghz - 2.0Ghz IIRC)
P4, 533FSB (mid range, 2.2Ghz upto 3.06Ghz - no Hyperthreading support)
P4, 800FSB (the best of the intels, with hyperthreading support, at the min the quickest is the 3.2Ghz)

The type of ram and board you need depends on the FSB of the CPU you buy.

AMD CPU's:
Durons (basically the equivalent of the intel's celeron)
Athlon XP (anything from 1600 to 3200). Between 2600 and 3000 run on 333fsb, and the new 3200's are 400fsb.
Opteron (64-bit CPU, from 1.4ghz to 2.0ghz, INCREDIBLE power, but not fully utilised yet (current windows versions only have 32bit cpu support).

Again the type of ram and board you need depends on the FSB of the CPU you buy.

If you were to tell me roughly how much you are looking to spend and what you mainly use your pc for i'd be able to help more specifically.

Well I dont know how much you want to spend, so its hard to reccomend a combination and tell you what you'll need. You could spend anything from £200 to over £1000.

Ok. I worked this lot out for £310:

AMD Athlon XP2800+ (333FSB) Processor
Asus A7N8X deluxe motherboard
TwinMOS 512mb DDR400 (PC3200) ram

You could always lower that price by going for a slightly slower CPU.

Depends if you'll need a new power supply aswell? not sure what you already have.

Current trends say buy Intel matey. AMD slipping at the moment until there new lineup is released.

I recommend:

MSI Neo motherboard... £77.49
https://www.planetmicro.co.uk/product_info.asp?stockcode=M002304&source=pguk

Intel Pentium 4 2400mhz (800 FSB)... £151.76
https://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=47546

2 x Samsung 256MB PC3200 DDR400... £88.30
https://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=42027

With that motherboard you will get fastest performance by using two sticks of memory rather than one. Total price £317.55. With a decent heatsink there should also be room to overclock that processor to 2.8ghz+ without any problems. I got that motherboard with a Intel 2.53ghz cpu and 2 sticks of 256 memory. It's loads faster than my mates AMD system. It does all depend on which components you use and how well they are setup though.

Hope this helped...

Kev - try www.komplett.co.uk - they do upgrade bundles (i.e. motherboard, CPU, heatsink and memory etc).

Here's a rough equivalent of what Lee suggested:

https://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?action=info&p=35819&t=1397&l=2&AvdID=1&CatID=44&GrpID=1&s=pl

Costs £267 from there.

Why didn't you say while I was down there ya pudding.
keep the RDRAM, it's much quicker than DDR. there are a few Motherboards taking RDRAM now. What processor you after? AMD's always gonna be cheaper and IMO better. The fastest AMD is a fair whack cheaper than the equivalent P4. motherboard makes no difference really, stick a Gigabyte one in Very Happy
HDD's are nice and cheap now too, so you can probably afford to go get a BIG one.
If you want I'll see what I can find and drop you over some prices. I'll do the CD-RW too (That I texted you last week!) Very Happy

Think you will find a motherboard using dual DDR400 will be faster than any setup using RDRam. But you must use 2 sticks of identical memory for the performance.

I still say MSI Neo 865 motherboard is your best bet.

400MHz vs 800MHz? Please tell me how that would be faster?

No let me pop over and take a look for you. Shops are out to make as much money as possible. Buy the bits you need shop around for them and build it yourself.

Two choices depending really on how fast you want to go and how much money you want to spend.

The main price difference will be on the processor. If you go for a p4 or AMD. The moherboard and memory will be the same.

For both systems you will probably need a memory type called DDR, speed determined by the motherboard and processor you choose.

Also you may need a new PSU if the one you have is old.

For doing Video work you really need CPU and graphics power. The faster CPU the better.

Regards,
Kevo.

It's DDR so it's double that rate and accessed both at the same time.

Figures of 6.7gig per second for memory access per stick at 400mhz. I have 1gig of ram with a p4 3gig 800 FSB. A matched pair of PC3700 DDR running at 434mhz.

Kevo.

DDR just means it's Double the data rate of SDRAM. Dual channel DDR will be fairly comparable to RAMBUS but single channel still only runs at 400MHz.

Not double the rate of SDRAM, double the rate specified.

Hmm, just got off the phone to Justrams and the thechie there reckons I'm right. 800MHz Rambus will outperform any DDR except Dual Channel DDR400. Double what specified Data Rate? DDR was just double SD, ie PC100 PC133 DDR200 DDR266 to start. They reckon they can now get 200MHz SDRAM if they bother. Rambus also goes up to 1066 now too.

Kev take a look at https://www.overclockers.co.uk and https://www.scan.co.uk (either maybe .com not .co.uk, not sure) and it will show you the prices for various components. As people have said, for what you're gonna use it for you need a fastish processor, RAM, motherboard, new hard drive and a graphics card. I presume the stuff from your old computer can be used for the new one... such as monitor and such like. If you go onto the websites I have mentioned you can browse round and price things up for yourself without people throwing figures at you, and you will see the difference between one model and a slightly higher spec version (processors).

IMO you are looking for a processor at least 2ghz, 256mb RAM, suitable motherboard, 40gig hard drive and a 64mb graphics card.
