are there any other devices on the same chain? If so, are they jumpered correctly?
Is the cable plugged in the wrong way round at one end? Are all the connections bedded in properly? Are there any bent pins on the IDE slot on either the drive or motherboard?

ok do the obvious first... check the power to the hdd.. change the ide lead... make sure its set to master or slave (which ever you need it as) make sure its plugged into the mo board correctly.

Go in to the bios and set it to auto detect and see if it shows.
