Hoping someone can give me a solution.

Just about to go for a ride with the mrs on the back yesterday and couldn't get one of the pillion footrests to rotate into position. It would not budge from vertical at all, except for a tiny amount of play.

I was tempted to go for the 'twat it with a hammer' approach but that has rarely lead to success in the past.

Any ideas?

Give it a soaking of WD40?

Is it possible to take it apart? Failing that use a hammer Very Happy

See you're doing it all wrong. You need to take the hanger off the bike, put it in a vice THEN twat it with a hammer.

Soaking it in penetrating oil wouldn't do any harm or you could take the pin out, dismantle it, clean and grease it then put it back on.

I tried the WD40 and no joy...seems like something is possibly stuck in the space it rotates into.

Will have to dismantle it I guess...which as it involves a screwdriver or something similar I'm going to break it. I just know it.

How the f*ck do you take the ring off holding the pin in?

Well, they are normally U-shaped and usually just ping off with a screwdriver carefully inserted into the bottom of the U and twisted. They then fly about ten feet through the air, roll across the floor and go down the drain.

There is a ball and spring device which pops into a de-tent either in the up position or down position.

When you deploy the peg the ball pushes against the spring and they both go into the hole the spring is housed in.

Well the hole is ful of shite/road salt preventing any movement of the two.

Pour hot soapy water over the hinge as you gently work the peg up and down.
That should help dissolve the crud.

Then remove all the bits and grease or copperslip/anti-seize it and re-assemble. It will not happen again. Will it?

She should do that. It is her end of the bike anyway. Innit?

Cheers for that Walloper. I'll give it a go before I tackle the nervous-breakdown inducing operation of a screwdriver.

There speaks the voice of experience. I know where you're coming from Embarassed Wink

As for the original query, since WD40 didn't have the desired result, (and twatting with a hammer probably won't be much of an improvement either)... so dismantling is the best option.
Just be careful when taking off those circlips etc Thumbs Up

Hi

Have the pegs been in pieces? On some bikes there is a partly squared off spacer locating the ball bearing. Put it in place wrongly and it stops the peg rotating.

All the best

Keith
