Just been for a ride, was having a great time till some bastard tried to knock me off!

I'm not a great one for filtering, don't have to much where I live and am hardly ever out on the bike in rush hour, unfortunately I got caught up in it today.

Dual carriage A45, down to roundabout leading on to M1, backed up 3/4 mile or so, stationary or slow moving, so i figure its got to be done and off i go, was careful, nice and steady and wasn't trying to squeeze into gaps that were not there, if there was room I went if not I waited.

It was all going really well and as far as I know I wasn't doing anything wrong. As we got closer to the roundabout the traffic was moving more freely so I decide to pull back into the outside lane to go right, I'm still filtering so flick on the indicator and start to pull into a (large) gap.

As I start to move the car behind puts his foot down and starts to come up the inside of me, at this point I'm already over the white line, ok I thought, so I speeded up a bit and moved a bit further over trying to be assertive, thinking he'd give up and let me in, how very wrong! he just kept coming at me, causing me to swerve out of his way! I managed to get in front of him although to be honest am not sure how and only missed the stationary van in front of me by going up the inside it!!

That was my first experience of a car driver attempting to knock me off on purpose!!!

Why? I don't get it, not my fault he drives a car in rush hour traffic.

Sorry to rant but I'm just so angry!!

I know that roundabout well, and yes it can decidedly cut throat at rush hour. Glad you're actually OK Thumbs Up

Nah i can imagine how pissed you get at someone putting you in danger over a simple 'pride' matter of being in front of them.

Get it in the car as much as i did on the bike. People seem to take it as some form of insult filtering past them or even just overtaking (especially on the motorway!!!) and then fill the gaps in a 'my penis is bigger than yours cause i can get there first' kinda way.

Short of whipping it out to prove him wrong Wink there aint a whole lot you can do. If he hits you its going to be a headache for insurance and all that with the filtering, but if your over the white line.... well again still a pain and something you dont want. Just one more annoying thing we gotta deal with and try to avoid. Worse comes to worse just sit right beside him then wait till he's gone and slip in behind him, you can always overtake him later on. Thumbs Up

I generally find you can tell who'll do it though, the boy racers, the business flashy types and the van drivers seem to be the worst.

Most don't seem to mind you filtering, but as you found try to pull in front of them into THEIR bit of road and its a diffrent story.

This is one reason that many roads get gridlocked as they fail to leave room at junctions and roundabouts for traffic going in other directions room to cross their path.....

I think we all know the "I know i'm blocking you and i should not be, but if i don't look at you, you ain't there, look...."

Just don't do what I did on Friday on my commute home (8 miles of filtering)...

I had wedged my bike into a gap at a set of lights, quite happily humming to myself, when out of the corner of my eye I see a car pushing its way up the inside of my bike, really close.

Not thinking, I shouted:
"ARE YOU A TWAT?"
Not the brightest, nor most slating of things to say. Especially not when I turned round to be confronted with a BIG angry man.
Oh shit.

Luckily, the lights changed and I weaved my way around the car in front, and the one in front of that, and then a bus that had pulled over.

Glad you're ok - all the more experiences you have the more confident you'll get Thumbs Up

Think 'Arsehole' was my choice of words! (very ladylike!)

Would prefer to avoid that type of 'experience'! but at least I'm now very aware of the complete prats that are out there.

He was just so determined that I wasn't getting in front of him!! Am still gobsmacked!!

M1 jct 15 can be a bit of a free for all, but most of the time drivers are sluggish and a bike can be round it before half of them realise you are there at all.

I have started filtering like an absolute maniac recently. I get hooked on the thrill and the fact that you can ride like an idiot without technically breaking the law.

big dual carriageway (penistone road) is such fun at rush hour. Sometimes I'll go just to "play with traffic". Lots of fun to out-filter these big fat sports bikes.

Without wanting to play 'Safety Nazi', filtering isn't a safe manouvere. I do it whenever I need to, but also whenever I feel it's safe. If just one car decides to switch lanes at the wrong moment, you could end up in serious trouble. Play safe. Karma

There is some right nutters out their that don't give a fuck if they kill you !
I've been ramed twice by a road rage car from behind ,sure he wanted me dead ! Got his number plate but the cops said it was my word against his ,so I had to use my own form of justice .
Also been pushed into the kerb .
I don't mess with cars now and keep well away from any prudential conflicts ,not worth losing a limb over !

i had a boke yesterday who saw me in his mirror and pulled over slightly to let me have some more room... Smile

..probably afraid for his car more than anything...see me weaving haphazardly towards his shiney new motor... Shocked

where was that thread that said that a car is classed as a weapon, so bikers are taking to carrying firearms and shooting back in retaliation?

only in America of course.

Normal everyday occurance for big city filtering, the anger will pass and such events will become a norm, I no longer post that often about nearly being killed.

I get this quite frequently when filtering, the way I get around it is to spot a gap ahead and snick straight into it giving the car/van/lorry no chance to pull forwards and shove me out. Sometimes they get really close to my back wheel to make a point that I've cut them off but I just don't move forwards until there is a big space in front of me to make a point back.

I think the whole driving/riding thing is a game, play it right and you'll enjoy it, get it wrong and the consequences can be severe... The most important rule to remember though is not to get worked up, you get beat by a fast car, so what? You'll beat another fast car another day. Play within your abilities and you'll be fine! Wink

I only filter if I really need to - Due to that beemer pushing me into oncomming traffic.
But, Is filtering legal? If a car hits you from behind there at fault right? Someone mentions headachs with insurance ^^^ but, Ive always thought if i get smacked from behind - filtering or not- (Or them blantly just not letting me into a gap) there the ones in the shit street & not me!?

pfft thats nothing i had a 4 wheel drive try to push me over (actually driving into my leg, no injuries though) then pull up beside me and start punching me in the head, had lid on so didnt hurt, but the way i was jammed against the car everytime i went to hit him back my bike started to go over.

Same situation really stationary traffic down dual carrigeway, stick my front wheel in as i need to be in left lane and crazy 4 wheel driver goes mad. only thing that anoyed me about it was i couldnt clump him one.

Laugh it of and be more assertive in your general riding style.

No matter who it is and what car they're in if you're in leathers on a bike with a tinted visor you do look kind of intimidating.

A car driver doesn't know i'm a big soft lanky streak of piss but when someone nearly kills me i just roll up to their window, give them a quick tap on said window and motion for them to wind it down cos i want a word.

I think every time i have done that the driver has gone pretty pale and aplogetic before i've even said anything Mr. Green Thumbs Up
