Right, so my ass is sore from sitting around on it for the past few weeks since I've gotten here and I've found myself a part-time job a couple nights a week at a pub.

I've never done bar work before, though I have done food service.

My BF tells me the most important qualities a barmaid can have is a nice smile and a nice rack. I thought it might be more important to be friendly and know how to pour a drink.

So what do you think? What qualities are most important in a barmaid?

None of the above...

I loved being a barmaid, some of the best 'nights out' I've ever had consisted of me working.

The MAIN quality you NEED to be in possesion of is a very good sense of humour, and the abilty to fake it if need be.

Other than that - all of the above...

You'll be fine MJ Wink

EDIT: Actually - the short skirt/bottom shelf is taking it too far - You'll just be thought of as that slutty barmaid and men will believe they have the right to speak to you that way! Thumbs Up

yeah, the short skirt thing was a joke based on a story BF told me about a girl that worked in his local.

Sad I don't have good "short skirt legs".

The ability to speak sufficient English to pour me the correct drink, and a friendly attitude.

Short skirts and nice boobs don't hurt, but as Lozzypops points out, you'd get plenty of annoying and unpleasant attention.

Someone that's approachable, and smiles, bit of small talk never hurt anyone either! Places are so unfriendly now!

Depending on which kind of place you work (scutbucket/student bar/family pub) prepare to get lots of attention for your accent. Expect 'where are you from? oh my great uncle ernie once went out there and got shot by a jewish big game hunter'

Also if it's a student place you might get hear 'America is ruining the world!', 'Capitalist pigs!' etc etc Mr. Green

If that's the case, pleeeeease invite me down to see you, I love ruining people like that. I had a grand old time at uni, upsetting left wing nutcases who thought they knew it all before they'd paid a penny of tax.

Above all else, I want a barmaid to be prompt and accurate with my order. No use being friendly if she's a complete ditz that takes ages and fucks everything up.

THEN, she needs to be friendly, then a good sense of humour, then attractive. In that order.

As Lozzy said, sense of humour is the most important thing by quite a way. Barmaid at my local back home is spot on, always smiling, friendly and up for a laugh and a flirt, knows most of the locals, and gives as good as she gets when it comes to the banter.

For example, 'cos we're usually a pain in the arse to get out at kicking out time, she bought a big tub of lollies, showed them to us, then took them outside. While we all rushed out, she locked the door. Fair play.

Pwntifex, seriously, I only know one single student with anything even approaching that attitude, and all the rest of us think she's probably the biggest bell-end imanigable. So there.

Oh, and a nice rack doesn't hurt...

Most of the reactions I've gotten so far (not behond the bar, just being out and talking to people) have been positive. Had one guy the other night who as soon as he heard my accent asked me if I liked GW Bush. I answered truthfully and told him I thought W was a jackass and the guy seemed genuinely surprised that there was an American standing in front of him who didn't like Bush. I reminded him that the majority of the Americans didn't even vote for him!

Then there was the guy who insisted on talking to me about all the places he knew in New York City, and referring to streets I had no clue existed. I told him several times "But I've never been to New York" but it seemed like he thought all Americans knew it like the back of their hand. Sort of the way you find some Americans who think all Englishmen live in London.

True enough, the " Mr. Green " was a clue, but it's a fairly commonly held attitude, and it's so far from the truth (in my experience at least) as to be funny.

Anyone's more than welcome to come to the pub with us and I'll personally buy them a pint every time a 'lefty comment' is made.

I really should go to bed, I'm starting to sound like I'm taking this a bit too (i.e. at all) seriously. Shocked

Just to be able to get the drink in a normal time, politeness, and then looks. But if your going to a bar for the barmaids looks... just think how many other people are doing the same Smile

Drink -> Politeness -> Smile -> looks

Been Bar staff - Easy job Thumbs Up
Smiling is a must, and a good sence of humore. Even if you get to hate a local (been there done that) Just go with the flow, dont let them upset you in anyway.
Nicely dressed too. Not to smart, and not to casual. Do you have to have a Polo shirt? As we have the choise with the BT Logo, or black shirt for the boys and black fitted top for the ladies Thumbs Up
