NS125 clutch change..... (FINISHED) :)

well, I got round to changing the clutch plates today, and even though my fingers are still stiff,cold and sore I thought I would post and ask how to get hold of the socket needed to get the final(i think) nut undone. so stuck at the moment, but should be sorted over the weekend(am also doing piston rings just after)

btw, pic taken on my camera phone, could be better quality I know.

I thought you'd come unstuck when it came to this. I looked all over for the socket (from Honda it was part of a set of 2 or 3 and cost about 80 notes iirc).

You'd be best taking an angle grinder to a normal socket to make it fit. When you mentioned it the other day i had a scout around for the one i made as i was going to send it to you. But it was a couple of year ago now and it looks like i might have lost it/chucked it away.

ahh, thanks for trying could I not maybe tap it round with a flat screwdriver? will size up the right socket to grind up if not....

Possibly, that's how i got mine off. But i suspect someone had been messing before me and hadn't tightened it properly, it seemed way too loose.

You'd need the socket to torque it back up anyway. There's a guy on ebay that makes them for about £25. A bit expensive for one use though.

True, I think I'm the only person to take my engine casing off in a fair few years... I managed to snap 2 bolts(the thread bit) out of the 10/12 there is cos it was so well stuck on and full of orange gunky seal type stuff round the edge, luckily it should be fine though, don't appear to have done any real damage. Will try a few things 2moro

same as the 'castle' nut that holds the swingarm spindle in place
i wouldn't reccomend a screwdriver as you can easilly butcher the job. as said before you might be best off making a tool to sort it

popped into our local tool hire shop/bike shop in way to work, turns out he has one(special socket), So I rented it for £5 for the day even if it's too big(think it might be) Imo it's worth it to find out.

*UPDATE*

well, I changed the clutch plates, using a hammer and chisel with slight force to get the 'castle' nut off, but also doing piston rings, so all is nearly done only got to put new piston in and bolt together, but my dad says there is a chamber at front of head, under thermostat housing for a powervalve, but is just has a bolt through as a blanking plate type thing, so could I get a motorised powervalve thing off an NSR and put it on mine? or not?

well, got it all more-or-less back together, but one thing I can't work out is if there should be like a set distance the pressure plate should be from the clutch mechanism, I mean, if you tighten the bolts right up, the pressure plate can't move in and out.... That's not right it is?

You mean the 4 bolts with springs under them? yes they need to be tightened right up.

yeah, sorted now, just needs oil...which I'll put in after a cuppa

EDIT, FINISHED so she is back up and running now, just needs running in
