Thats what id describe it as. It sounds like its coming from the engine, but it only does it after ive been riding, stop and flick it up into neutral. When i start the bike it doesnt do it, its only after its been moving. I went to a garage today and had a quick word with the mechanic who said it could be the chain as its a bit slack. But i dont see how as it only makes the noise after ive stopped moving. Just wondered if anyone had experienced this as well.

Perhaps he meant cam chain?

Is it a one-off knock, or is it a repeated knocking sound? Does it continue until you stop the engine / pull away again, or does it fade away if you just sit there?

No no, he diffinately meant the chain, he was tugging at it when he said it. Its just a repeated knocking, i can feel it againts my right leg, and it stops when i either pull away again or turn the engine off. It does fade after a while maybe a minute or two.

Cheers

Right side of the engine, stops as soon as you start moving. Sounds like a bit of clutch rattle.

Just ignore it, loads of bike clutches rattle. Ever heard a ducati with a dry clutch? Now that's what I call a proper clutch rattle.

Yeah, my CBR6 rattled like hell.

Does it do it when you're stationary but with the clutch pulled in?

My 125 does the same ...Start it up all is fine, ride for a bit, up to neutral and then its start's a nocking nd a rollin.

Doesn't do it with the clutch in in any gear only when it's in neutral, think it carrys on in neutral whith clutch in but stops immediatly first is selected.

It's nothing to worry about anyway, it's something in the gearbox i do beleive. It's happened on the previous engine and this new engine.

Cheers,

Luke.

Perfectly normal, once the clutch gets a bit of wear it will rattle.

Also, if the carbs are a bit out of balance it will make it more noticable.

Go and try riding a large capacity late 70's aircooled four and then youll learn what rattling is!

I have always liked the look of the 90's styled dDucati's, see one in the flesh the other day. A nice 748, look sweet, a bit small to be honest but the noise of it Rolling Eyes

The illusion of sexiness was dispelled in an instance Thumbs Down

My ZXR had some stange noises.

When starting it from cold it would sound like a tractor for the 1st few minutes until wared up, and then when warm, you would hear the engine noise and a slight 'secondary' engine noise that would resemble a rattle.

Very strange, but as many have stated, some bikes just have 'that strange' noise

three main noises on most motors

1) clutch rattle-usually the loudest, quite a loud rattly/rumbly noise

2) Camchain, regular ticking noise, gets overwhelmed by other noises when the motor is revved unless its right on its way out or the tensioner is knackered/sticking.

3) Valvegear, rumbly/tinkly noise especially on older motors with a bit of wear in them and when they are out of adjustment. The more cylinders there are the noisier this one is.

Aircooled motors are generally louder. For example the XJ600 divvy always sounds like its about to shed its camchain even if it never does.

As a rule of thumb, if you think it MAY be a problem, it probably isnt. If there is something wrong, it will leave you in no doubt.
