I'm currently using a pioneer dv-393 that does the job well enough for me . It's also the first divx player I've owned that's able to handle subtitles and dual audio tracks without glitching.

For the bedroom (and probably the living room soon as well) I use an Xbox, soft modded with XBMC installed. No more writing things to disc, just plug into the network and stream off a server/desktop PC.

You can do it with a PS2 as well, it's just not quite so idiot proof nor is the interface so easy to get on with. XBMC is free and supports everything I've thrown at it to date, that includes subtitles. It would be a little underwhelming for a decent lounge setup, as the sound output on the Xbox isn't great (no optical as standard, it's an addon breakout box), but for a secondary/bedroom TV it's pretty much perfect, particularly if you download alot of the stuff you watch.

Don't quite see why it's showing off either, Xbox cost me ~£16 on Ebay, including Splinter Cell and DVD remote. Spent another £15 buying a USB adapter to port the mod files to the Xbox memory card from my PC as I couldn't be arsed to make one.

Even all added up it's damn sight cheaper than buying a dedicated player, plus after fitting an 80mm fan instead of the channeled 40mm screamer that's in there as standard it's near silent. All it took to learn how to do this was half a brain and an hour or two on Google Rolling Eyes

I've got a Kiss dvd/divx player that I'm quite happy with. The one I went for has network functionality (it even comes with a wireless card as well) so you can stream content from your computer onto the divx player.
