The latest additions to the "Family Pascoe" arrived last night after a somewhat spirited chase down the lanes to the garden centre...

When we moved into our house last year the sizeable pond in the garden was full of froggy death and froggy sex. It was disgusting. Since the few fateful weekends we spent capturing the remaining live frogs and rehoming them in the River Stour (throwing them off the bridge down the road Smile ) we have been busy populating the pond with fish.

Jon inspecting the pond and reading the instructions for the new pump...

The fish have had babies and some of them have even lasted the winter. Unfortunately, we lost some shebunkins - so last night we bought some more replacements and a new filter and pump \o/

The new pump and filter... it's huge!

And finally the boys themselves:

They join the 18 other fish already resident in our pond Very Happy Let's hope they all get along!

Bloody hell, that pumps like 20 times the size of the last one!

I miss the pond when it was froggy death and froggy sex all round, it had it's own unique feel compared to other ponds I've seen.

That's because it was more of a bog than a pond. You'll be pleased to know that there is still an excessive number of newts chilling out sunbathing near the surface of the water Smile

The big thing isn't a pump, it's a pressurised filter. The pump is in the little box behind the filter (I'm just getting it out in that photo).

Sadly we couldn't completely fit the new kit last night. The old filter had the in/out pipes on opposite sides. The new filter has them on the same side, so the old pipes didn't fit. I bought 10m of new hose this lunchtime so hopefully it'll all be up and running this evening. Smile

I helped build, stock and maintain a 20,000+ltr pond at work.
around 65 assorted fishes.
The fish loved it.

It's one of the few/only things I am proficient at.

A good pond should look after it's self so long as is is balanced.

You need one of two important things or combination of both.
1)Enough shade to control Algae. (60-75% surface area)
2)Or a biological filter to reduce nitrate/nitrite. (Algae food/Toxins).

This will dramatically reduce time cleaning and fish need some shade anyway.

Healthy fish will control the other occupants to an acceptable level.

Only problem we had were Herons and Gannets fishing without permits. Evil or Very Mad

My dad loves his pond and his koy. Got loads of mirror carp in there, ghost koy and one leather carp which is nice.

They must be approaching 4-5lb in size, quite often threaten him with sushi Smile

If you need any advice im sure me or my dad will be able to help.

Cool, fish are great and your pond looks good.

heres one of our ponds, they are great to look at/sit around but the maintenance and upkeep of large ponds is far too much for my personal likings. theres 2 connecting rivers with another pond about half the size of this main one, and another river bit with a waterfall and bridge.

All I got at the min, quite old too its changed a lot since. My dads on holiday and I'm looking after the pond, got some maintenance to do to it next saturday so I'll try and get some more pics then if you want them.

The smaller pond has also changed since this pic, but you get the idea.

The panoramic shows the river thing to the left and the same goes on the right all way round to meet up with the smaller pond with a big waterfall .

Sparks, that's beautiful!
I would love a pond like that full of gorgeous healthy koi.

I'm happy for the time being with the (indestructible) goldfish, comets and shebunkins - nice and low maintenance.

Got the new pump and filter running tonight. Needed something to take my mind off what I'd like to do to the twats that nicked Ann's bike.

Quite impressed with the amount of water it gets through. The pond is looking clearer already! Very Happy \o/

After inspecting the UV filter tomorrow we can turn that bit on too.

Can't wait to have nice clear water again.

Next job is to landscape the bit behind the pond, remove the rubbish ferns and build a decent water-feature. A job for a summer weekend I think. Very Happy
