PostPosted: 07:55 - 03 May 2007    Post subject: Reported to police for riding on pavement? Reply with quote

When I'm over my boyfriends flat I have to park my bike with his on the pavement. The local police are fine with this. We even chain it to the tree.
This morning though, after starting the bike up as usual, an old man came up to me saying something. I couldn't hear him at first as I had my helmet on and ear phones. I told him hang on I can't hear hear you and took my helmet off. He backed off quick (I don't look that bad in the morning!) and started saying he was going to report me to the police for riding illegally on the pavement.
Now I got quite confused and a little alarmed, naturally.
All I was doing was sitting on the bike engine running so that it would warm up. Also I have to ride the bike off the pavement as if I walk it off I run the risk of dropping it (tiny chance but I don't like taking risks where my bikes concerned Razz).
I explained this. But he started backing off madly screeching at me to stay away and that he was getting my reg number, but he was acting like I was coming at him with a knife or something everytime I tried saying I wasn't riding the bike or making a move towards him! Really upset me that did, always been polite to old people. Never been treated as a 'yob' before Sad
Anyway he's got my number now Confused
I went to my local police station but they said thee's nothing I can do and to wait and see if he does anything.
As far as I've been told I'm not in the wrong and don't have much to worry about.
But what if he can put a case against me. I've only got my boyfriend as a witness Confused
What should I do?
Has this happened to anyone else? Never been treated this way in my life, almost feel sorry for chavs if this is the attitude people treat them with Neutral
Sorry for the long post Razz

old people get really scared of things they dont understand. i dont think you have anything to be worried about to be honest. a lot of the time old people are so stuck in their ways there is no reasoning with them. if he does it again just completely blank him, let him go to the police if he wants you are not doing anything wrong.

If the local Police are fine with you parking it there, and you have already told them about this old person threating to report you then you should be fine.
after all you weren't doing anything wrong. And unless he has physical evidence you were riding up and down on the pavement then I wouldnt worry about it Thumbs Up

I wouldn't worry about it. He sounds like a senile old spunker with nothing better to do.

You've done all you can from your end, i.e. going to the Police. You're already reported your side of the story, and if this guy ever does get round to reporting you (for nothing!) I think it's quite likely the Coppers will see him for what he is and won't really take him seriously.

Added to the fact that the local Police are fine with where you park, I really can't see there being any problem at all. The poor senile old guy is probably still living in the 60's in the middle of the Mods and Rockers and was shocked to see a woman riding her own bike!! Wink

lol you have to remeber old people have nothing better to do than find someone else doing something wrong.

Just dont think anything of it, once suicidle old women stepped out infront of me telling me is there any need to ride that fast down the main road into my estate. I asked her "what speed would you like me to do?" She replied "10mph" with that i drove round her and left her standing there. She also made the threat that shed report me to the police, ok i was doing 30 - 40mph but ive never seen her or any police about it yet and that was in January.

With luck you should give the piss-stained old c*nt a coronary,

shrug and pretend you don't know what happened !

i remember getting a old bloke whinge at me for blocking his drive with my wagon, waiting to be offloaded at a building site.

he said ' you're gonna have to move that, there is someone coming to visit me!!'

my reply, 'how about please then!!'

i'm not one of these wanker drivers than wont move until it suits them, unless i am offloading!!

but hey, old people can be right twats at times. shouldn't worry about it too much, you are not doing anything wrong Razz

When i parked my bike in the town centre the plastic policemen (community support)

officers jumped all over me when i put my shopping bag under my seat.
I thought he was going to have a go at me for something.

Then he shouts at me, it's a section (whatever) offence to ride on the pavement and i'll give you a fine.

I replied... "uhhh ok... it's not like i'm riding it, i'm standing beside it with the seat open...."

He then preceeded to write my details down to which i promptly pushed my bike near the end of the pavement, fired her up, and fucked off.

Whats the deal with that...
I park on the pavement outside my girlfriends house and the old people wave at me Smile

Its a tough one, you don't want to be harsh but sometimes you just have to be. There is a misconception that old folk are all gentle and fluffy and never rude.

Most are but some just aren't. I'm 80 and you WILL RESPECT MY AUTHORITYYYYYY!! Before you know it, a gnarled arthritic elbow slams into your side and there they are; between you and the post office counter. They turn and fix you with that look only an old goat can have. It says; "Don't even dare say it, I'm 80 you know!"

Sometimes if someone is rude, I find it's entertaining to be outrageously nasty back at them. This works especially well with the really young and the really old.

After being called a "big gay biker" by an 8 year old, its funny to see their face crumple when you reply with: "Fuck up you ya stinking wee shite!" They just don't expect it. Laughing

Next time just flash your boobs, the guy will probably drop dead right in front of you. Then pop down the station and report him for blocking the pavement.

I did get three points a long time ago for riding about 10 foot on the pavement to go to a cash point. My own fault, I was being lazy and I didn't realise the guy walking up the road had an helmet on Rolling Eyes

EDIT: it might not have been three point, maybe just a fine. At my age I'm lucky if I can remember things from yesterday let alone that long ago.

SNIP hurrah! , I knew there was something in the RTA about this but couldn't be bothered to check properly , a CSO once expected me to teleport my bike to the bike parking bay (on the pavement) once, I had a similar arguement with him , he never got back to me.

Dont worry about it. The police will know what they are dealing with if he tries to get the law envolved.

I sometimes have to ride on the path to get out of my drive because someone is always blocking it. I even remember one time when I was squeezing through a gap between the car that was blocking the drive and another. The driver was right there and said 'make sure you dont scratch my car on that thing'. I actually told him to fuck off and I wouldnt have to squeeze through if you didnt park there.

I read about parking in London and apparently you are allowed to park on any pavement outside London as long as it’s not on a part that a pedestrian would naturally walk on. So parking at the side of a post box is ok, a corner that has railings etc. London is the only place where you are not allowed to do this by law.

I also no that if you do not use the engine to power the bike, you can do anything, go the wrong way up a one way street, footpath, anything. You have the same rights as a push chair or pram!

I saw a motorbike parked on double yellow lines on a busy road 15 years ago and a traffic warden walking by, I asked him why he did not put a ticket on it, he said because it was not causing an obstruction since it was so narrow. I personally have never tried this and would never dare.

So if you are worried and the police are after you, the only thing they might be able to get you for is if you use the engine to power the bike on a footpath.

I personally would be worried about this old man, since I am also male and if he complained, the police might take his word for it that I was riding on the pavement trying to kill him. Saying that all the police could do is read me the riot act since they did not see it. Since you are female, small and young, you have absolutely nothing to worry about (the police men have to be very, very careful when speaking to you), in fact if this man keeps bothering you, the police might actually have a quiet word with him or his carers.

At the end of the day, who would a judge believe, a senile old man or you, if the judge has any doubts he would have to dismiss the case. The police would never prosecute unless their were at least 2 witnesses (including the old man) and they are all mentally competent.

Doesn't sound like you're doing anything more than most people when they ride/drive off of their driveways (across a path) onto the road.
