I had a 1987 Mk2 1.4 Sport, in Rosso Red, as my first car (sort of a 1.4 version of an XR2).
Superb little car, even if a little rough around the edges compared with more modern kit.
CVH engine is pretty much bullet proof but are a little "Clattery" on cold start up because of the hydraulic tappets (a friend of mine had a 1.1 with the "Kent" engine, if I recall, which was pretty much clattery all the time).
Spares are Dirt Cheap.
Not particularly economical, fuel use, though, but then that could have been because it was a 1.4.
Cheap enough to insure.
Mine had 94k on it when I got rid (for an '89 Mk3 1.4 Ghia as it happens).
Easy(ish) for DIY, but let down by the "Front Hinged" bonnet, which meant you had to reach across the front wings to get at anything around the engine.
Got a pic somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it out.

Just to add.
The Mk2 stopped production (for the Mk3, obviously) in 1989.
I should say that most have rusted away to shite by now.
But at least the engines will still be running. |
