my cbt runs out soon, i didn have the money to do the theory and practical test sadly, it means i guess even though you have been riding for two years and over 30ys of age you still have to take another. would your insurance be invalid if you rode even though your cbt has expired. would it not be a good idea if your a certain age and have done your cbt you dont need to retake it.

Age has nothing to do with it. Provisional licence and no CBT means insurance would be invalid. You need a CBT certificate to take your test anyway, so why not just do it? You can probably get away with just doing the 2 hour die, rather than a whole day of boring stuff you already know.

Isn't the practical test around £58 and the CBT around the £100 mark? So it would have been cheaper to go for your test Confused However, you need a valid CBT to do your test so you will have to retake your CBT whatever now.

You must be really really skint. Like the posts above the theory test was about £58 and the theory
£25.

Plus I bought the theory cds for a tenner. And then 2 lessons with a riding school £60.

That's £153 all in. (Thats £1.47 a week over 2 years,)

And of course if you're going to do your practical test you'll need to do a theory test and also will need several lessons before you'll be ready! Which is where you are suddenly talking of hundreds rather than tens of pounds... Rolling Eyes (Got beaten to it by post above! However not many people can get away with just 2 lessons before being ready for the practical test!).

I did my CBT last year, and towards the end of this year I'll need to be deciding what to do insurance wise. Since when I renew my insurance in November I'll either be taking my test half way through the cover or retaking another CBT... Very Happy

That's because it's only valid for two years Rolling Eyes What if you passed your CBT and didn't ride a bike during that time? Would you still be safe on the road?

What's the difference - if you pass your DAS and don't ride for the next 5 years, would you still be safe on the road!? Confused

Thats for a 2 - 3 day course. Lessons, Bike hire etc.

If you have a geared bike between 70 and 125cc (under 21s) then you can take just a test for like £50ish.

If you are over 21, I think you can take the test on a ER5 or something providing its 33bhp.

Dont quote me on that though.

But the £400 is for a couple of days training and a test.

Thats the cost of booking the test with the DSA.

How much training if any is up to yourself.

I had 2 lessons and passed 1st time, my mate Pete had no lessons and still passed first time. Borrow the motorcycle test book from the DSA from the library and read that, it tells you everything you will be expected.

There is also another book by the DSA which tells you how to ride, read and study that and practice/practice.

IIRC the CBT validates your provisional motorbike bit of the driving licence, so if you get pulled over with an out of date CBT you'll probably get done for riding without a licence as well Sad

That's fine for you but as someone who didn't need any lessons before taking your test you are very much in the minority!! Most peope do need lessons and that doesn't mean they are bad riders, it can be a confidence issue, an awareness of knowing what to expect during a test etc, etc...

Bloody 'ell I 'only' needed 10 driving lessons before passing my car test but I don't assume that means EVERYONE only needs 10 lessons... Brick Wall

I wasnt saying that everyone that cant do their test without having lessons is a bad rider............i was just thinking that in this case the person has been riding for 2 years, and i would have thought been ready for their test, but as you say maybe not !!

i know the way im riding at the minute after having 4 years off, it would be pretty much 50/50 if id pass it now, but then again iv only had the bike 2 weeks.........but as you rightly say, its a confidence thing !!

The difference is a CBT is a one day course (and is piss easy), a full licence means you have gone through training and reached a standard much higher than that of a learner rider.

I agree with the difference as you say, however regardless of the standard reached at CBT or full test level - having done either of these and then not ridden for 2 years doesn't mean you'd still be at that standard when you get back on a bike!
