Snapped key in ignition!

Ok so i've managed to snap my key in my ignition... leaving half of it in the barrel!

What is the best way to get it out?

I am reluctant to take the barrel out as it has a shear-bolt which i'm not too confident in removing.

Well i'm guessing there isn't any of it sticking out otherwise you'd have just pulled it out with some pliers?

If you can see the end of the broken part you might get away with putting a dab of epoxy on the end of the bit you have and shoving it back in the keyhole to stick it to the broken bit. You'd have to be careful not to use too much glue though.

yea a bit of bluetac or even superglue on the fob end of your key, put it in the ignition, take it back out hopefully with the key end on it. hmm bit dodgy like

I reckon blu-tac is definitely not sticky enough... I don't really want the blut-tac to come off in the ignition and worsen the problem!

I've tried superglue but really don't have the patience to stand there for 10 mins holding it in place!

Double sided tape thinly cut to fit the end of course?

Try all of the above, but from personal experience you're probably on a hiding to nothing (even if you remove the lock).

My suggestion is, if you're still able to turn it on and ride the bike, get on it and ride to a locksmiths. Don't forget to take the spare key with you so you can start the bike if they're sucessfull.

Tried the superglue tactic several times now (just had to grin and bear the drying time xD ) without success.

Starting to really annoy me... to get the barrel out I have to take off the top yoke, drill off the shear-head bolt then unscrew it.

use a match stick.put super glue on the end of the match stick. and push onto the brocken key.

hi i have had this problem before all i used was a piar of small metal cutters could not get to it with pliers they just kept slipping off but with the cutters it made a grove into each side of the key which made them grip tighter and it just pulled straight out i tryed all of the above before doing this

Try a local hardware shop for a magnet, that's how I've got broken housekeys off the lock. They usually just lend you one, especially if you live nearby.

Hey,

Take it to a locksmith! It cost me a tenner for them to remove the broken key (The b*stard recovery guys broke it). Included in that tenner was a new key. However i did have to take the barrel off, but thats hardly a tough job.

It wont be as expensive as you think.

When its the ignition barrel on my bike i think id rather give it to an expert with £10 rather than take it to bits and possibly knacker the barrel.

And i dont own a playstation or a TV Rather lots of old motorbikes that need regulaly taking to bits

Get some tweezers. The sharp pointed ones. These might well get the key out.

Managed it eventually with Shauns RS125 where the key snapped off in the petrol tank, although we did have to take the lock out of the cap.

Might sound dumb, but you do have the ignition switched to a position that lets you take the key out?


If you've got to take the yolk off then just turn it upside down and give it a shake.

If you use tweezers put a bit of wood glue/pva on the tips. When it dries it helps grip.

An electric toothbrush on the barrel can help jiggle the key as you attempt to lift it out.

Sometimes there is a drain hole at the bottom or on the side of the lock, if its got one push so thin stiff wire, like a sewing needle, in it and jiggle.

I like the idea of a small drill bit, I've got some with my dremel, have to remember that one.

Aye, the biggest problem is that ignition locks have a little 'flap' that comes across it when the key is removed. The key invariably breaks below this flap which then prevents you removing the key. It's easy to push the flap across but then you can't get the key out past whatever you're holding the flap with.

the reason I suggested a locksmith is because a) They are an expert. b) What they'd charge is probably worth it for the hassle and time it saves. c) You're going to have to go to the locksmiths anyway to get a new key cut.

Along the same lines of the fact that I have a set of tyre levers and am perfectly capable of changing a tyre. However it takes about 45 minutes and is a total pain in the arse. As such, I take it to a tyre fitter and pay him to do it.

Get two very thin drill bits, push the either side if the key, turn them slightly so that they grip, then gently pull them out with the key. may take a few tries but it is one of the main methods i have used in the past.
Or get two pins and bend the very tip, about 1/2 a mm so that you can fel the bend but not really see it that well. Put the pins down either side with the bent bit towards the hey and walk the key out, ie, pull a bit with one then the other bit by bit. takes time but that too works.
Failing that................ hit with a hammer....................... doesn't work but makes you feel better.
