Just got a new pair with about 300 miles on them, will the rear tyre take 3000 miles of abuse or more ?
( may tour on them )

Probably will do - I've had a couple of rears on my bikes. I seem to remember them not standing up to abuse that well - track stuff. But for general touring they should be OK.

Depends how fast you ride really. Could be anything from 2000 miles to 5000 miles but I expect somewhere around 2-3000 miles. The BT020's I toured with, lasted around 7000 miles.

I've heard varying reports of tyre life expectancy when using BT014's. Some people find them reasonable and some people wear them out very quickly indeed. Personally I stick to Michelin Pilot Powers. Thumbs Up

A chap I work with was changing his rear 014 after 1500 miles because he was down to the banding, but then he's a complete animal with the throttle and weighs 19st, another lad I work with gets 4000 miles out of a pair quite comfortably and is still rapid with it.

Surely an average rider would get 3000 out of a pair if it's including some touring miles aswell?

Not a definitive answer I know, but hope it helps...... Wink

What bike did he have it on? My guess is something like an R1 or a Fireblade etc.

I've had loads of em. They last between 2k and 3k. I wanna get something which is just as sticky and lasts longer. Probably try some 2CTs next.

I dont think my tyre will last till we go to france. I'll stick an 021s on it (the new stickyer 020s) and give them ago.

Coming up to 6,500 miles with them on the ZX6R for the original set. Thing is I'm not that fast a rider but I'd have thought you'd get 3k out of them easily on touring.

Both were on k5 gsxr thousands, my point being, you need to take into account a persons' riding style when talking tyre life......I personally can get a set of 208RR dunlops to last over 5500miles on a ZX10R and am not that slow a rider either, whereas I know a chap who does a pair in 1000 miles, and he rides so slowly I could overtake him on a pushbike!! Very Happy

Ive seen one diminished in 2500 miles on my old CBR600 with some lively riding.

Ive also seen one die in 3000 miles on a late summer/early winter commuting spree.

Not the ideal touring tyre, will round off pretty quickly I would have thought.

about 2200-2500 on my zx6r, but I have complete confidence in them. If touring I would expect 3-3.5 from them.

Right, on my Cat I've got a Pirelli Diablo that's pretty much dead. That's lasted about 3800 miles. Been told that my next set of tyres should be BT-014s but another source recommends Pilot Sports. I can get both sets for about the same price so what do you guys think? Also, how do they compare in terms of tyre life?

Depends how you ride.

From what I remember of the last time I rode with wave, he needs all the grip he can get Wink.

Well I would say that you are not comparing like for like tyres so don't expect them to do the same job.

Bridgestone BT014's are a sticky, fast riding kind of tyre that you wouldn't expect a long life out of. Often suited to the supersports range and can easily handle a trackday.

Michelin Pilot Sports on the other hand are aimed at the higher powered bikes, such as the Blackbird, Hayabusa etc and are presumably designed to handle the vast amounts of power at the expense of really sticky kind of grip that you expect from the BT014's.

So which do you think would be best suited to a Yamaha Thundercat?

I understand the BT-014 to be a pretty sticky tyre but when you say the Pilot Sport was designed to cope with the power of bikes like Hayabusas and Blackbirds, surely that would suggest they are soft so as to prevent wheelspin or do you mean they are a harder compound to extend tyre life?

Well it also depends on what kind of riding style you have as well as what bike you have but I would suggest that you might want to be looking at something like the Michelin Pilot Road or something equivalent.

These kind of tyres are more of a compromise between grip and durability, ie they will last longer but won't give you quite so much grip as a 'sticky' tyre. Wet weather performance should be better too with a tyre in this range.

Go for the BT014's by all means but they are primarily designed to spend large parts of their life lent over and I wouldn't think that they are gonna be great in the wet. If you spend lots of time riding dead upright, ie motorways and touring then you will probably square off a 'sticky' tyre quite rapidly.

So what kind of a rider are you, fast reasonable or slow? Unless you are riding your bike to its limits all of the time then I doubt that you would notice the difference between a 'sticky' tyre and a more 'normal' one. Except when you need to change them as the 'sticky' will probably only do half of the mileage of the other before it is worn out.

Like most folk have said, i had a new rear 014 put on my cbr6rr when i got it and ive done approx 1.8k its probably about 3/4 dead, so i would expect 3k out of it at the most. thats mainly with reasonably fast road riding. but they are a good tyre, and more than meet my needs anyway.

For the Thundercat and you Wave, I'd say 020s. They're not as expensive as the 021s, they have very good grip in wet and dry and warm up really quickly, but they last for ages. I replaced the worn ones on my Cat with another pair.
