Hi. Just out of curiosity do we have any vegetarians on board, if so, can I just ask why you decided to become a veggie? I remember when I was at high school and this girl turned Veggie because she thought the texture of meat wasn’t very nice, she claimed it wasn’t the whole ‘meat is murder’ stuff, just the fact that she thought the texture was crap , errm yeah lol. I thought this was a bit strange to be honest, but whatever floats your boat. What does everyone else think to vegetarism (sp) etc?

Think vegetarianism is a bit pointless but whatever floats your boat.
I am a bit of a carnivore so I cant really comment I suppose.

Yep I'm veggie, basically if I couldn't kill it by hand myself I won't eat it.

I have to admit, I see where the person you went to school with meant, the only meat I really like is chicken and gammon, because beef, pork, steak etc just don't 'feel' nice to eat, its too chewy or something. It doesn't matter how it's been cooked or how tender it is, I just don't like it. I've had millions of people asking me how I don't like steak and it's the greatest food in the world, but it just don't float my boat.

My bros gf is a complete veggie tho, you know the kind that won't take certain types of paracetamol because the casing of it is made from some part of some animal. Bit strange, but each to their own I guess.

Takes a bit of a trawl through the memory to remember why I initially went lacto-ovo-vegetarian but I think it was a combination of not believing that we should treat animals with such disdain (it simply felt fundamentally wrong) and also not actually liking meat much. As a child the only meat/fish I would eat was chicken (in red wine sauce), pork steaks, liver and onions (i don't know why...) and smoked haddock. So, on the back of that I took the decision to go l-o-vege. My mother wasn't too worried as, in addition to still eating dairy I absolutely adored eating veg. Over the following few years I gradually looked deeper into the ethical/economic/spiritual etc aspects and found that I was graduating towards vegan. The last thing to go was vegetarian cheese (I used to eat copious amounts of the stuff) and I've not even been tempted to go back.

I have said many times over the years that if I felt I should return to eating meat etc, I would. However, that time hasn't come as yet and even if I did I'd be obsessive over the treatment received by the animals (the ethical/spiritual side of my reasoning for being vegan being of great importance to me).

Although some people seem to miss certain flavours I can't say I ever have. I miss the convenience of certain foods but that has the plus side of what food I do eat generally being lower in salt/bad fats etc. Oh, if you miss the smell of bacon, try frying mushrooms with a little smoked paprika - it's been known to confuse people and make them think I'm cooking bacon Smile What I actually have the most trouble with is clothing - shoe buying is getting more and more difficult (unless I can afford to splash out a fair amount of cash), hats aren't easy (and I adore hats), silk is out (Noooooooooooooooooooo!) etc. and bike kit... that's a minefield > <

Oh, and one more thing relating to what I think about vegetarianism. I think anyone who says they are, should be. I absolutely loathe the trend which sees people say 'I'm a vegetarian but I eat fish/chicken etc. These people should just feck off and die quietly - they're making life incredibly difficult for those of us who are not using the word as a label and instead actually live it Evil or Very Mad

I have been my whole life, simply because my parents were. They didn't particularly like it as kids, so when they grew up and moved out, they decided not to eat it, and that's how I was brought up.

I mean, I've tried pleanty of stuff in the past out of curiosity: beef, chicken, pork etc. but I don't particularly enjoy it. I don't hate it, it's just not something I'd choose to eat because I just don't like it enough.

I've got no problem with people eating meat. In fact, my girlfriend's mum runs a farm that produces cows for beef. As long as the animal has been looked after and raised properly, I don't see what the problem is. Let's face it, if it wasn't for farms producing meat, so many types of farm animal would be practically extinct.

My other half often eats what I eat, but from time to time, she'll make something for herself. I have no problem with it whatsoever!

I went veggie about 2002-3. It was mostly because of a nasty stomach ulcer which meant I had trouble keeping down certain foods, but I've stuck with it.
I'll admit that doing it properly can be a bit of a minefield. Avoiding certain additives like animal rennet, animal-derived lecithin, gelatin and cochineal extract is a major chore. Then there's the argument over whether fish finings and gelatin used as a fining agent in the brewing of beers and wines can actually be considered an ingredient. Then you've got to decide whether your average egg-eating veggie is allowed to eat caviar or not.
Then there's the fact that admitting being a vegetarian makes you either a social pariah or the butt of everyone's jokes at mealtime. As a result, it's not that often that I eat out. I prepare my own meals wherever possible and try to either eat on my own or with close friends or family.
That's not to say I don't enjoy it. The advantages of being veggie, for me at least, far outweigh the disadvantages. I couldn't ever see myself going back to eating meat.

I've been veggie for 15 years now. I'm also sick of being asked why, and so I reply, because I am.

I like meat but I know meat isn't good for health so I avoid them.
I started avoiding them when I was 23. Recently I think chicken is good for health, so I started eating chicken.
If I was invited to a steak house, I permit me to eat it a few times a year.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't like meat much.

I do enjoy fish, and I'll eat poultry: like chicken or turkey. I have ham on sandwiches, and I've discovered how good English bacon is (compared with American bacon). I have been known to have a hamburger occasionally, but I don't eat steak.

But meat grosses me out: it's some animal's muscles! I was grossed out so much by watching my Dad eat a steak that I actually went vegetarian for a year when I was 17. It was too hard to eat a balanced diet when my family wouldn't buy additional things, and most of the meals made had meat in them at home. When I moved out on my own, I didn't buy meat, unless it was sliced meat for sandwiches or maybe some fish occasionally.

So I do eat meat, just not every day. But I completely understand your friend's point of view. Just because you enjoy the taste and texture of something, doesn't mean someone else does too.

For every animal you refuse to eat, I shall eat three!!! Smile

I was veggie for about 4 years (16-20ish). I had been on a survival course with the army, and part of it was being put on an island in the middle of a loch for a couple of days. The idea was to cover shelter building and fire making, but to make things more "fun" they air dropped a crate of rabbits & chickens (dead) for our evening meals.

The most food preparation I had done to that point was opening cans, making sandwiches and (the pinnacle of my culinery abilities) making a Vesta ready meal, so when it came to skinning and gutting a rabbit it was a bit of a gory mess. There was only a few bits that looked edible by the time I had finished, and what I did manage to salvage I ended up burning, so the experience wasn't exactly fulfilling in the "fending for myself" department.

What it did do, was to make me think more about what the cute bunny had been through, especially as its death was a complete waste. I should have been able to get a couple of meals out of it, but instead it ended up a pile of charred gubbins and a head. From that point I decided that since I couldn't do it myself, I wouldn't eat meat. My parents thought I was just being awkward, my friends thought I was doing it to be "different".

I stuck with it as long as I could, but as the memory faded and the desire for meat grew, I gave in.

Nowadays, I'm more concerned with the quality of the meat, and the quality of life the animal has had. I could, with a bit of a push, go veggie but when it comes to the crunch, I do love my egg and bacon butties Smile

Isn't good? You joking? Meat is very good for you. Too much RED meat is bad, but too much of lots of things is bad!

I'm not wholly surprised by this. They are just the latest in a long line of products over the last couple of years that have been re-formulated and now contain animal products. Profits/ease come before all else for many companies sadly.
