Well, it's not a model on general sale in the UK but the engine looks very similar to the 500 twins I've been running for years. The water pump is in a different place but the top-end looks identical. I presume it's a double overhead cam twin, redlines at 11k. Engine number beginning EX400?
This being the case, any good quality engine oil grade 10w-40 or 20w-50 should be perfectly sufficient. They started making that type of engine over 20 years ago so anything you can buy now will exceed the specification it was designed to run on. Just avoid anything that has an anti-friction additive which can cause the clutch to slip.
I used good old-fashioned castrol GTX in mine for years. I now use bog standard motoul mineral oil but only because the place I buy it from gives me a free air and oil filer with every bottle.
EDIT: On closer inspection, it's an inline four isn't it? I think the closest thing we have in the UK is a ZRX400. Same story with the oil, just remember to be fastidious with the changes. If it were me, I'd give it a new filter every oil change not every other like the manual says, they aren't expensive. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |

we go quite a few of them in new zealand (tax free importing from japan is great
its basically a zx4 without the fairing (or zxr400 with out the usds and fairing)
just under 60hp
nice looking bike i basically turned my zx4 into that but had a round headlight instead
brilliant nippy bikes
have fun mate
do oil changes atleast every 3000 miles
and it will never miss a beat, if you get lazy it'll hate you and destroy itself.
i used to use a 5w50 mainly because i was in a cold area and generly did short rides,
but if you are in a warmer place then step it up to a 10w50 or a 15w50
also watch the join where the pipes go from 4 to 1 as the weld has a tendency of blowing and making the bike run like shit ____________________ the humans are dead

So, after all of that, shopping for small cosmetic stuff for the bike I ended up crashing it. It was raining really lightly and the roads were ungodly slick with the oil. I made the mistake of riding right in the center, and locked up the back wheel. Bike went flying down the road, I flew about 25-30 feet, did a few mid air flips, landed on the side of my helmet about 3 times. Thank god for jacket armor, that and my helmet saved my damn life.
As for the bike, very minor damage it looks like. The shifter is broken off, as is the signal lights. Engine itself seems ok, although I do hear a ticking sound when I turned it on after the accident which could possibly be the valves maybe? Back tire needs re-aligning and the left side of the bike is all scratched up. I take it into the shop tommorow.
Overall, I came out of this VERY lucky. I was going a solid 75 clicks when I fell. People who saw the accident couldnt believe I got up off the road and walked to the side. I think I might have to re-paint the bike though.
As for my physical condition, I am a little sore all over, my left knee is bruised and cut but otherwise its no problem. Thanks for all the advice on the bike, it looks like me and this thing have a real relationship now! lol. |
