Hi. Since taking a big interest into bikes over the last 3 years (when I got my scooter, then cbr, etc) I’ve often pestered my dad to rekindle his interest in bikes that he had as teenager. He’s 50 now, the last time he rode a motorbike was 33 years ago when he was 17 and it was some 2 stroker 250cc bike he tells me, although he can’t remember the name. But whenever I ask him if he would like a bike, he just normally shrugs it off and claims that he’s too “old” to start biking up again which upsets me a little, cause then I could go riding with him. Who know’s maybe one day he’ll finally take the plunge.

Every time I go to Squires Café I always see old men & woman probably in their 40-60’s, perhaps retired so they have a far bit of disposable income, so most of these chappies I see tend to have 06-07 bikes. The best there pension can afford I suppose. I have no problem with this initially, but I have to think to myself how many of these old timers have been riding for the last 40+ years constantly or have they only started to ride a bike again within the last 12 months after sitting on their mates bike and thinking I wanna start biking again? Surly with age comes the normal conclusion that reactions , eye sight, etc are all a bit warn out after 50 years on this earth, much slower than the younger generation, so the whole point of this thread was to ask who do you think is more dangerous a BAB (Born again biker) OR a new biker just starting out?

I think BAB's jump on a bike and expect the same kind of bike they rode years ago,,, however what they get is an up to date ballistic missile with fuel injection and handy brake,, (not brum brakes)

How wrong were they when they said that they could keep up with the new technology.. Rolling Eyes

Im sure I once heard that something like 16-24 and 45-50+ were the two highest groups and the worst times of year were april and september for deatsh but can't find many facts on it at the moment.

Both newbies and BAB's have their own problems with being liabilities and probably for the same reasons - either imortality or not being 'sharp'. There has been a lot of accidents round here (cumbria) over the last month or so and the police have put that down to bikers who have been off the bike over the winter and arent as sharp as they should be but are expecting to be able to jump on and ride like they did at the end of the summer. If a few months can do this then 30+ years certainly can.

I found this site that talks about age groups and death stats but its american so not sure of its relativity..

Definately new riders. You cant beat real road experience, in which you've spent time learning the way other motorists behave/react, and learning about different road conditions, where to look, where to be in the road etc.

I'd say a bab was more likely to err on the side of caution also, whereas a noob rider would see themselves starting to improve, and suddenly jump ten steps up the ladder of overconfidence Confused

Still not fond of babs, as they tend to crawl around the place in large staggered groups Laughing

a mate of mine got a standard blade he spent £1000's on it everything went to carbon fiber fully race tuned (i think was super chipped or may have been a diff bike had chipped) it was a ballistic missile in the end.... he got bored and px'd it. a BAB bought it picked it up.. 5-10 miles later unfortionatly wrapped it and himself around a tree (was DOA Crying or Very sad )

New bikers without a doubt. I'm living proof of that! If you've 20 odd years road/ driving experience, I'd say that counts for a hell of a lot more than just having slightly faster reactions.

Whether someone is on a 125, 400, 500, 600 or litre, all those bikes will do 60 or more, which is easily enough to have a major RTA and kill yourself several times over. Experience is king.

Being in the older of the 2 groups mentioned and having only just returned to bikes in the last year. Embarassed needs must a car and a cross city comute is not my idea of fun.

I agree we do have the road craft, 30+ years of riding/driving is not forgotten and can help you stay safe. Cool
But if you have a large disposable (i have not) income then its far to easy to go out and buy the latest 1000+ super rocket and find that you are out of your depth and that, that tree is just calling your name. Crying or Very sad
But the flip side is that road craft you have gained, it can stop you getting into situations that the less experienced would. Surprised

The fact i have a wife and sprog waiting for me to get home make's me far more carefull, than i ever was at sub 20 with no ties.

According to BikeSafe, the average age of bikers who've died in accidents is just 17.

I can vaguely remember reading an article in PB many moons ago.
It was basically a meet at some track (or could have been Bruntingthorpe).

Anyways the cast and crew (and some others) were tottally "Owned" by this geezer on a BIG Kwaker (ZXR, ZZR Question , I can't remember which).

He was late 50's, and had a pony tail and all.
Looked like Sean Connery in Highlander he did. Mr. Green

Bloody Fast Rider anyhoo. Thumbs Up

sweet, just got out of that group last week!

but on a more serious note, i voted for bab's (suprisingly) partly because new riders tend to be extremely cautious whilst getting the hang of a new experience, however bab's may fall into the "i can still do it" trap and go faster than their abilities allow after a 10 year odd break from riding

I wouldn't quite say new bikers, although people who haven't any road experience are typically more dangerous on the road (in my experience).

Although a B.A.B. may be unfamilar with their (insert bike here), usually they have some road experience from their cage driving which does carry across some bit.

Well, the kids are going to vote BAB, and those 30+ are going to vote New Rider. You need another option for "Both".

BAB s come back thinking they are riding gods to be met by increased traffic on the road and faster bikes with sharper brakes, noobs think they can keep up with more experienced riders and are over confident, so where is the sit on the fence option? Laughing

The most dangerous period is when you start to get confident after a a year or so of riding.
Riding experience (and general road/driving experience in any vehicle) is the best way to be safe.
