My key has decided that it would be extremely funny to break in the lock on my petrol tank today! Evil or Very Mad

unfortunately there is still a piece of it inside the lock which would be impossible to reach with a pair of pliers or anything like that, does anybody have any idea's as to how I can get this out without paying a lock smith to do it for me?

Place said petrol lock in a rag (lots of rag) and hit it on the floor gently with the lock part upside down to force the broken bit out !

If this fails, use two very long and very thin nails to try and pry it out.

You do realise that the lock comes with a dust cover so this wouldn't work!

This wouldn't work because the lock has a dust cover which would stop the broken piece from falling out!

That would be a great plan, if it wasn't for the tiny piece of plastic that I like to call the dust cover!

Some locks ---- The dust cover stays open if the key breaks in it !

Mine ---- The petrol tank lock on my bike has a cover that swivels round by the user using one hand to do it, there is no other dust cover on mine after that !

Errr... could you not just tape the dust cover open? Or otherwise fix it a way that it is held open. Personally I doubt a magnet would work unless the rest of the lock mechanism was alu or something.
You could find a roll of tape or something to bang it on so you don't break the (now open) dust cover off.

Might also be worth getting a couple of sewing needles to prise it out. these can be slightly bent at the ends so that it will get a bit of grip.

Hi

How the hell did you do that?

I think the dust cover you mean is just a tiny plastic cover actually in the lock?

I would use a pair of tweezers to try and get the remains of the key out. You should be able to hold the cover out of the way.

Can you open of lock the cap? If so it may be easier to take the lock out of the cap. Think this is easy (never done it to an RS). On the underside of the cap there is a 1.5mm thick steel bar which holds the lock in place. Push this through and then the lock should just come out.

All the best

Keith

spray a load of wd40 into the lock and leave to soak in, spray again then try and get it out with one of them magnet pick up tools... it might be wedged in there though!

If so then try the tweezers method already mentioned.

If that dont work then you'll have to drill NEXT to the actual key in the lock until you can slide the key upwards.. then use your spare key to open the filler cap, take the whole cap off and replace it!

Only things i can really think of, just keep it lubed with WD40 etc.
