i have an fzr400r 3en2
and on the engine block are 2 holes ether side of the engine situated inbetween the fins, and when bike gets warm coolant comes out if them. i can not see any threads in them and do not know what they are for. my engine has been rebuilt so i am a bit concerned as to why this is happening.

The holes are probably to drain water out of the plug cavities for when the bike either gets washed, rained on, or develops a leak/blows it's head-gasket. I would look for a leak in the radiator hoses around the top of the engine. Not ever having worked on a FZR engine I couldn't be more specific sorry.

They are overflow 'outlets' or holes for the cooling system I think. I used to have the odd drip from mine when the bike was tipped on its sde stand.

I did have quite a leak and traced it back to my own fault, I failed to connect the radiator pipes tightly with the jubilee clips so water would drip down the engine casings making it hard to find the source before the dummy tank, air box ad god knows what was removed.

I can tell you the exact problem.

Whoever rebuilt your engine re-used two rubber o-rings on the coolant pipes that pass down through the rocker cover. If you don't use a brand new o-ring every time you remove these, they are pretty much garaunteed to leak.

The bike is leaking coolant past these o-rings and into the sparkplug recess, it is then draining out of those two holes which are there for that express purpose. The holes do not lead into any internal parts of the engine, they are for draining fluid off the top of the cylinder head.

What needs to be done is to remove the tank, drain the coolant, undo the two screws that hold those coolant pipes in place and pull them out of the rocker cover. Throw the old o-rings away and fit new ones (they are an odd size, you'll need to get proper kawasaki ones). Refit the pipes and refill the coolant system.

The o-rings cost about 50p each. If you paid someone to rebuild the engine, I would make them sort it out because pound to a penny they re-used the old o-rings in the first place. I bet they've clarted them in silicone too, it doesn't work.

Cooling system is pressurised so no overflow just an expansion chamber in the cooling system. They are just drainge holes for the plugs.

I knew what I meant and it came out a little spaz like, for that I apologise. Of course the expansion tank for the FZR is located on the right hand side under the pillion seat Brick Wall

YES whosthedaddy
thats the holes i mean, and that appears to be where the water is comming from, so should they have anything in them or do they act like an overflow, as like you said it only leaks when you lean the bike or put it on side stand.
do i need to worry or can i ignore it.
thanks god someone knows what i mean as i did not know how to add a pic thanks. Thumbs Up Very Happy

I found this a little tiresome and damn fiddly.

Tilt the airbox at a slight angle so that the rubbers meet the carbs and making sure that they are lined up correctly give them a Hulk style forearm Wink It may be easier to start from one side then continue to 'tap' the remaining rubbers home as you go. Once you get one done, the rest soon follow Thumbs Up
