I was veggie for over five years during the late 80's early 90's but I gave it up for Lent and never went back... Mr. Green

Seriously though, How long have you been a vegetarian and what made you start?

I'm quite curious about motives for restricting yourself to (or from) particular foods. I enjoy meat and wouldn't want to cut it out of my diet but I understand that people have good reasons for their choices.

Good for you if you have stuck with it. Thumbs Up

I have not eaten meat for about 20 years but I did have a one year break when I needed to bulk up after an illness.

My motives in becoming a carrot muncher were varied. I do not like factory farming and the way animals are treated as comodities, nor do I like the health implications of a diet high in fat and high in the chemicals used to produce factory meat, I am not very keen on the taste of meat either, and I was trying to shag a vegetarian.

I eat large amounts of meat but think its probably not all that healthy to eat all the time. One of my best mates has been a veggie all his life just cause he doesn't like the taste of meat.
I think I could give up meat but I'd still eat fish.

WTF are you on about? Humans are meant to eat other animals, thats what we are supposed to survive on. Laughing

I don't mind people being vegetarian, at the end of the day it is only them missing out on Vitamin B12 and the lovely taste of bacon and steak. Laughing Laughing

Very Happy
It freaked me out on Saturday when I went to the toilet and it smelled eerily of asparagus. Damn this Formby asparagus season.

Vegetables have always been the sideshow for me. Meat is the main event. I know a guy who I swear I am only friends with in case we are in a plane crash and somebody needs to be eaten. Would anyone like a slice of George? He's corn fed.

Ahhh you took the carrot munching a little too literally, I hardly ever eat them Mr. Green
As to Vitamin B12 it is not an issue for the average veggie although it can be for vegans, even so there are plenty of none animal sources such as Dang Gui.
As for missing bacon and steak, I dont.
All cultures have dietary restrictions, In the west we do not eat dog. It is not that dog is bad for us or does not taste pleasant, it is just that we do not eat it and the same goes to a lesser extent to horse. It always confuses me when people question Muslims or Jews on their dietary laws without questioning their own attitudes to forbidden meat.
Rather than have my culture or religion dictate what I eat I just choose to make my own choices, humans do not need to eat flesh and I choose not to although I do not care what others eat.
My ferret however has a digestive system that means that she must eat nothing but meat and that is what she eats.

I feel that restricting your diet at all can never be good.
I am totally open-minded when it comes to food and have eaten among other things rat, squirrel(!) and horse fairly recently.

Yum yum.

I enjoyed my time as a vegetarian, I actually became one as I was having intestinal problems. My GP at the time recommended a change of diet, vegetarian + no dairy. It was quite good and I quickly got used to cooking with new and different ingredients. In fact so good was it that my problems went away and I actually increased in weight. My 10 year old daughter decided to become vegetarian last year so I've managed to help and advise her. Giving her a balanced and healthy diet, and looking after herself. So more and more of our meals are gradually becoming vegetarian in emphasis. Given that we're actually omnivores I would argue that meat is the side-show to the veg Mr. Green

The mistake that is commonly made is turning vegetarian and substituting meat and two veg with two veg without meat. You are better to look to a culture that does not eat meat or at least eats very little meat and base your diet on theirs, that way you will get a balanced and enjoyable time at the table.
