Hi

Got some things out of my mothers loft this weekend. Books I haven't seen for 20 years. Things like that. In one of the boxes of old books I found a Japanese dollar note. No date on it. Anyone know anything about these? Quick google found nothing.

All the best

Keith

Perhaps an ancestor of yours didn't get to spend it after Hirohito's pacific tour and it got brought home, put away and forgotten about.

Did a relative serve during WW2? A Grandfather perhaps or maybe an Uncle? It might have an interesting bit of family history attached to it.

Hi

Strange thing is it is a $10 note. Would think that back then $10 was a hell of a lot of money.

It was in a box full of my old magazines, so probably something I found 25 years ago. None of my relatives were much involved in WW2 (parents were born at the end of it / just after it, grand parents a bit old for it).

Hi

From that I found this.

Quote:

ubject: 2.9) I found a banknote that says "The Japanese Government",
what is it?

It's Japanese Invasion Money (JIM). This was printed by Japan
for use in The Philippines, Malaya (not Malaysia), Burma, and
Oceania during World War II (and presumably beyond) as part of
the so called Co-Prosperity Sphere. Enormous quantities of these
notes were printed and most of them are worth very little. However,
they have an interesting history. Some have various overprints on
them.

Here's a rundown on the different monetary units:

Burma: rupees/cents (block letters starting with "B")
Philippines: pesos/centavos
Malaya: dollars/cents (block letters starting with "M")
Oceania: pounds/shillings (block letters starting with "O")
Netherlands Indies: gulden/cents (block letters starting with "S" -
"De Japansche Regeering" instead of "The Japanese
Government")

The Malaya notes have been touted as "invasion" money made for the
conquering of the U.S., but this is not correct.

That may have answered it.

All the best

Keith
