I dont get this, why is it when the person next to you yawns ONLY THEN do you yawn. Weird hey?
Next time you're in a meeting, try this little experiment: Take a big yawn, cover your mouth out of courtesy, and watch and see how many people yawn. There's a good chance that you'll set off a chain reaction of yawns. Before you finish reading this question of the day, it's likely that you will yawn at least once. Don't misunderstand, we aren't intending to bore you, but just reading about yawning will make you yawn, just as seeing or hearing someone else yawn makes us yawn.

I haven't yawned yet.
I love yawning though, its like a really good sneeze.
I read, well, skimmed the wiki article but there all wrong; let me explain.
Yawning is a deeply programmed response that has been carried down through the millenia from ancient man. Basically after a busy day chasing buffalo, bison and wilderbeast (etc) ancient man was tired, however this is not what initially caused the yawning effect.
In those days humankind hadn't figured out how to work metal so had no cutlery. Because they lived a basic hand to mouth existence, food was always cooked and eaten straight after it was caught and due to the lack of cutlery and crockery ancient man had to open their mouths really really wide in order to consume the meat
Ergo, not only was ancient man all tuckered out after having chased the food across paleolithic planes (or some shit like that...) He also had to open his mouth really wide due to a lack of eating tools. (And no, they couldn't use their teeth as they'd all fallen out; no dentists then you see... Smart arse... )
This is why we yawn when tired and after a particularly hearty meal.
As to why we yawn in meetings at work, I firmly believe that its a response triggered by an instinctive urge to chase the speaker across the office and car park with a spear, catch him (or her) then cook and eat them as punishment for being boring and waisting your time by insisting you attend a meeting that had nothing whatsover to do with you by any stretch of the imagination.
I think I might amend the the wiki article because I'm sure you'll agree; my version is far more valid...
(Again I'm bored at work, I'm getting my productivity in early today. I may as well go home now... ) |

My missus has an annoying habit of sticking her finger in my mouth when I’m enjoying a yawn.
Seriously it pisses me off, and I can’t do anything.
Having half a yawn is horrible.

Ive been so bored that I have been testing this theory out in the office. By simply using the techniques of misdirection and re-petition of words like YAWN- ing. I can make people yawn.
The experiment with this thread has proved pretty succesful as well, with many number of people yawning just by reading this.
Damn i think im going to yawn again. |
