I think anodised bolts, coloured screens, anodised bar ends, anodised foot rests, pro-bolt preload adjusters etc. are all chav on a bike. They just make it look pretty without serving a function.
The vast majority of corsa boys( no disrespect to anyone that owns a Corsa it's just to illustrate a point) glue lots of plastic to it then fit wheels so large the stock motor has trouble going above 80 with them, then add 30 kilos of stereo equipment, and a little can thing to the exhaust so it sounds a bit louder.
At least most of the bike cans add a horsepower or 2. ____________________ My Flickr |

Even small bike mods if done right can make a huge difference imo.
But i dont get the feeling cars are improved much without spending huge ammounts (where you can just go and buy a better car in the first place) and even then, its still just a car :/
Still i can't see the point in allot of mods on both sides spoilers on saxos being a good example.. stuff that doesn't actually help anything, there mostly to say "woo look at me!" no offence to anyone but i can't help but think of anodised things, where stainless would be much better.
Another thing, modifications to bikes are there for all to see in many cases, a car could be vastly improved performance and you'd never know to look at it.. ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

I have absolutely no objections to a well modified car - a job done well normally means that the owner takes a pride in their vehicle, has taken the time and expense to really make the effort and generally won't drive too much like a prick. Not in every case, but most, in my experience.
Badly modded cars just look chav. Every single time. The worst offender has to be the Novadose kit.
And no matter how well a car has been done, if there are any neon lights on it anywhere, then that screams utter, utter, utter, tasteless chav. Remember kids, just say no.
Bikes? Again, it depends on how it's been done. A few bolt-on anodised goodies, coloured double buble screen and race can does not a well-modded bike make (no offence). There's so much to it than that. I personally prefer a wolf in sheep's clothing; something that looks fairly innocuous (with a few subtle hints), but can go like sh1t off a shovel.
I wouldn't say a badly modded bike looks chav (unlike a car) - and thinking about it, I reckon that's probably down to the fact that the accessories available for cars and bikes are so different (I refer you back to the Novadose kit...) ____________________ Dead nobodies in company cars... |

'If you ain't got the go, don't have the show'
Most modded chav suspect cars utterly ignore this fundamental rule of vehicle modification.
Or, to put it another way, they gots all da bling, but it don't got no-ting.
Some bike mods are tacky and appear cheap - coloured headlight covers are my particlar bugbear, but ultimately the bike will still be very quick indeed.
This is not true of your average modded Saxo, or as some guy down my old street used to have, a Fiat PUNTO 50. With huge alloys. And a dragon graphic all the way down one side. And only 50 bhp. And the worst handling of any car I have had the misfortune to drive. |

The only cars that can pull of body kits are the one's that come standard with one, this includes the wheels aswell, very rarely do is see a car where the rims actually suit it.
A few weeks back i saw a Ferrari with aftermarket wheels & it looked horrid.
Cars that look good with kits like the Cooper S Works, Civic R, Beetle RS, Clio Sport etc because they all come as standard & actually suit the cars. I just feel that Supra's, Evo's, Subaru's & all the rest look awful with anything other then the standard kit.

Most people know what cars look like as standard, so any add ons instantly stand out as looking a bit chavvey to 90% of people.
When people see a bike come past with a nasty coloured race can and a load of funny colour metal bits, they just think its how sportsbikes are made so probably don't really think of the rider as a chav. As a biker though you can see some bikes do look completely chavtastic as you can instantly see what bits have been bolted on.
On the flip side I saw a Mistsi Evo FQ400 with a nice set of volk TE37's.
Most people would proabably see a noisy trevved up car and think it no better the a hatchback covered in Halfords crap, without really realising that its a pretty serious car with some nice extras. ____________________ Yamaha FZR400RR 3tj

it's not Chav, it's Barry...
Chav is more an attitude.. pointless mods are barry, and might be done by someone that isn't a chav.
mods for the sake of looks, and looks alone are, imho, Barry... especially if the mods actually do more to lessen performance than enhance it.
Examples for cars are:
Large spoilers, heavy and un-aerodynamic body kits.
it's difficult to do mods to bikes that will harm performance, apart from things like stupidly fat tyres that will affect handling, or loud cans without alterting the fuelling.
generally 'barry' bikes are all paint-job, matching anodised bits, and buzzy/vibey 'lightweight' bar-ends...

this is always said......if its anything but standard its `chav`
so are blacked out windows `chav` then? if so does that mean a blacked out visor is aswell?
word is OVERLY used on this forum!
i do agree that if you put on a body kit that ends up weighting more & is less areo-dynamic then thas dumb!
funnist thing is, that `chav`(which is SO used on here) isnt known as a word under the spell checker ____________________ GSXR750

My car has lower sports suspension, low profile tyres, sporty camshaft, higher compression head, larger throttle body, better airbox, sporty exhaust & chipped ECU.
Nothing to do with looks, but i've had all those parts off the car to do maintenance work. When it came round to putting them back on i had the choice of new shiny sporty bits or rusty old OE bits.
Sporty bits add some power and make it nicer to drive, but from the outside it looks just like any other Cinquecento.
My car, my money, my fun driving twisties.
As for body kits, they're something i'd never do. Show but no go. ____________________ "because one stroke isnt enough and four strokes waste two" |

Well, mate of mine bought himself a Jag XJ12 then spent 7 grand on it without changing its external appearance other than the alloys (which were still Jaguar alloys and so looked meant). It stops, goes and corners in a totally awesome manner. In my oppinion, that is how to mod a car.
Stick a nice set of WP springy bits on your bike, buy some harris callipers maybe a few bits of stainless to stop it rotting away and it's all good.
Start bolting anodised alloy crap and screen trim to it and you've overstepped the mark. It was cool for a short period in the 80's but you have to remember, EVERYBODY was walking around in bermuda shorts and rebock pumps back then. Truly the decade that fashion forgot.
There is also a world of difference between a vehicle modded with bolt-on accessories out of a catalogue and a properly customised vehicle. Show me a vehicle with some nice panel work, loads of one-off parts and a well thought out paint job and I can usually appreciate the merit in it even if I don't particularly like it.
There's a mini going round locally that I think is well smart, if not in particularly good taste. It's obviously been done in a tongue-in-cheek manner. It's not a chav car, too much effort has been put into it. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. It's a Cinquecento 1.1 and it was the fastest thing up and down the A5 this weekend, well, no one got past me.
End of the day, it puts a smile on my face.
But yes, i would love to have a Civic Type R, but we can't all have one like you. ____________________ "because one stroke isnt enough and four strokes waste two" |

As ugly as it is, it's pretty clever considering it used to be a Nova. But most modded cars i see are horrid, i only like the factory tuned cars (as mentioned above)
