Dunno if this has been discussed yet, but:

HELMET PRICES SET TO RISE AS VAT THREAT LOOMS

If your in line for a new helmet - then you had better be quick,

Helmets which are currently zero rated within the UK, are no longer included within the list of goods under the directive 77/388/EEC that can carry a zero or reduced rate of VAT.

From what we understand the revised list of VAT free goods defined in what is known as Annex H are now to be agreed by EEC member states during 2004, they are contained in the EU Council Directive; ( COM(2003) 397 final) issued this week (10-09-03) which amends the Directive 77/388/EEC on reduced rates of VAT.

Also to lose their zero VAT status are Industrial safety footwear and helmets, cycle helmets and children's clothing, all items that are currently zero rated but only within the UK

Hi

Well, suppose the government needs to meet John Prescotts food bill, plus bail out the almost bankrupt congestion charging scheme.

All the best

That sucks for you guys so flame those slimy, hypocritic, bribe taking sons' of politicians into dust and demand some justice! Razz

On the other hand, it's a good thing for people living outside the EU because when they buy a lid from UK they can get some of their money back afterwards! Though with the prices you have there already one probably couldn't find a worst place on Earth to buy bike gear from Razz

it saved my life on wednsday!

if i couldn't have afforded that helmet i would have been on my old helmet....the outcome could have been very very different Confused

wake up and smell the roses you stupid shite rags

I hope MCN and other motorcycle organisations spark up on this, you should never rip off safety

Read about this in MCN about this a while back.
It was mentioned that EU ruling states that if VAT is added to lids then they are no longer classed as safety wear.
This also means that wearing a lid is no longer a legal requirement.
Hence you don't have to wear one.

I definately would, albeit my reasons will be in the following order:

1.) I find it uncomfortable to ride with my visor up at any speeds above 10mph, so I doubt that I'd be able to handle riding without an entire lid.

2.) It means that I can safely land on my head when I'm only wearing a T-shirt. Wink

3.) They look cool. Cool

I have to say that I would be very surprised if lids were no longer mandatory (although this VAT thing is a good sign of it Confused), especially with all of the extra emphasis on road safety and stuff these days.

Depends on the bike, but if i was popping down to the shops or going around town on a big cruiser i'd certainly go without a lid sometimes.

I suggest a protest about this!

I will ride into a wall at 80mph with no lid and we can say that I wasn't wearing one because I couldn't afford it because you guys tried to charge me for a helmet with vat on it! I'd say it but I'll be dead!
