I've recently purchased an NSR, 1800 miles, 2 previous owners, 03 plate, mint condition.

AFAIK it has never been de-restricted, it's completely stock. And yet I can easily get 85-90mph out of it (indicated) in 5th gear (I think, I was too busy shitting myself Laughing front was VERY light and road surface wasn't great either). I wasn't even tucked in! I did have a feeling the bike had more to give, I certainly wasn't at redline anyway.

The acceleration is great, although I admit I have little to compare it to and have never actually timed a 0-60.

My question is, what the hell is going on? Is this possible on a restricted NSR? The bike has been looked after exceptionally well, and it's spent most of it's life in a dealership, hence the low mileage. Previous owner mentioned that it could be de-restricted, but he'd never felt it necessary to.

I don't think my speedo is THAT inaccurate (seems spot on when I've tested it through those speeding sign things). I can't be arsed to rip it apart just to see if it has restrictors in place either TBH. Could it reach this speed restricted? Or does the max restricted speed of 70-75 refer to the actual speed rather than the indicated one?

You should have got a LIFAN! Then you can talk about 3 figure speeds on a 125.

If you have time, take apart the exhaust and inspect the manifold and see if the bores are big as in there's no material inserted into the bore. Secondly check the carbs of there's a washer somewhere. If the answer is no to both of these, then chances are you're derestricted.

I think i'm right in thinking that restricted NSR's were good for up to 75mph, although somebody might want to confirm this with me.

LIFAN?! WAY too much machine for me! Laughing

I've just had a poke around and the exhaust restrictor is definately in place. This is a UK machine and not an import BTW.

Derestricted, it may even rival the 98 R1... Very Happy

You've taken it a step too far lad, only the RS50 can rival a '98 R1

Doesn't sound restricted to me, though you really need to try a proper run and see if you can get it in to 6th without loosing speed.
A stock NSR will do 75 so if you're getting more than that it certainly sounds as if someone's taken out the exhaust and/or intake restrictor.
This is quite common - people selling the bike are not likely to disclose that it's been destricted as they won't be able to sell it for as much.

Might be worth checking front tyre pressure - I guess if the pressure's low the front wheel will indicate a higher speed than you're actually travelling but probably not really enough to make too much of a difference.

I miss my old NSR... Crying or Very sad

I had it in 6th today and I got it up to 97mph at around 10000rpm.

I think it's been derestricted partially by the first owner, once I pass my test I'll check to see if it's been rejetted etc. Airbox is still stock which may explain my slightly oily/carbon coated plug. I think I'll leave the sprockets for now as the acceleration is more useful to me than a higher top speed.

Thanks for the advice people Thumbs Up

How soon are you doing your test? you are running the risk of damaging the bike if you leave it too long running badly.

If you are making 97mph, then you should have all the restricters out cause I make just above 90mph in top (but I am downgeared so thats what its meant to be Razz) and I have taken all restricters out.

Where have you looked, the fuel intake and the exhaust right?

97 does indeed sound like you're missing both your restrictors.
With just one of them done you'd get to about 90, but certainly not 97.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the sprocket - leave it as is.

Now time to perfect those redline starts from the traffic lights. Thumbs Up
