I crashed in October 05' and ended up with a metal rod in my femur. the injury has healed now apart from 2 scars and xrays show the bone has joined properly etc.

It's looking likely that IF I want I can have the rod removed at a private hospital paid for by the insurance. I know you might be thinking well just do it but I'm not sure if I can face surgery again Sad infact it terrifies me.

I was wondering if anyone has any insight or has had anything like this before? deep down I really want it out of me. I'm only 18 and the doctor recommended it.

ride safe!

Will it make any difference if it is or isn't there?

I'm no big fan of surgery and I understand that you probably wouldn't want to put yourself through it again if you didn't have to.

Will it be better for you if it was removed? It is probably only worth doing if the benefits outweight the drawbacks.

I think it would be more beneficial in the end. It would put my mind at rest and would, to me 'conclude' the whole accident. Also doctors mentioned the fact it might be dangerous if I was to damage the leg again, having a rod there would seriously complicate things!

@LUKEVFR - Thanks for posting that, I know it sounds evil but it makes me feel better knowing there'sother out there been through all this Laughing

I will ask the doctors opinion on how long it will take for the bone to get 100% after I have the rod taken out, will be drinking lots of milk thats for sure!

any more thoughts appreciated!

The main worry is if you break the leg again. If that happens and you bend the pin, you're in trouble.

My gf has a nail in her femur, she's opted to leave it where it is unless it starts to cause problems.

I had staples in my ankle, but they were to stop one of the bones from growing so they had to be removed. The removal operation was nowhere near as serious as the one which put them in there!

That said, I've never had structural problems with my bones. I think if you have stopped growing and the bone is weakened it might as well stay there!

Sounds like you have made the decision. Seems like the right one as well.

If its gone then you won't have to worry about damaging it and as Luke said you have a cool pin to show people Very Happy

Im in the same situation, Ive got a 17cm plate going up my shin or whatever the actual name is... that and 2 screws in my ankle.

I need them removed to join the army, but I cant face the worry of having a weakened leg.

Just dont know what to do... mine has 8 screws holding it in place, not including the 2 in my ankle, so thats alot of holes in the bone..

Thumbs Down

I have a 3" x 1" Cowhide patch in the sinistral/anterior part of my Cranium.
The Doctors advise that the patch should never be removed.
Something to do with 'losing any sense of reason' I now have with the patch in-place. Shocked Laughing

Had pins removed from my foot, no biggie, got a plate on my femur with 17 screws holding it there. Consultant said I could have it removed but it is not necessary to, so in there it stays . . . For now.

Oh, and the gap in the bone has gone now due to a bone graft!

If you want it removed go for it, don't worry about the surgery, then again I quite enjoyed mine, oh and the morphine after. Wink

Have it out, as stated next time you mash up and it bends you will need major repair work. I have metal in soft tissue from a land mine and it aches at times but is doing no harm. In bone it is a different story.

Had a bolt in my elbow after a multiple fracture and twisting a bone, wish i kept the xray now.

Anyway the doc recomended the bolt came out as blokes tend to still grow up to about 21 and the bolt could restrict growth and movement later in life.

I hate hospitals full stop but i wanted the thing out more, went in and after the operation was let out the same day, they cut along the same scar but now its healed its quite big and resembles a leech Eh?

If he recomends it i would say in the long run you will prefer not to have it in just swallow hard and get it over with Thumbs Up

I had a pugh nail and plate, in my fractured femur...many years ago when i was 17. Had it removed 2 years later, bit sore for a couple of days, but nothing major, no where near as bad as I felt after the initial plate went in.

Dont worry about it, you'll be fine. Thumbs Up

My sister got run over when she was 8. When she was 16 they opened her up to remove 3 six inch steel pins and after fucking her hip up a bit they had to leave them in. Turns out they would have to break her hip to remove then. She is now 35 and has pain and discomfort from the pins.

My advice to you is get it removed while you can.

Hi

They can cause problems. Some people develop a reaction to the metal after a few years. Also breaking the bone with the pin in place cna make things far worse.

That said, make sure they have the right tools to remove the pin Shocked .

All the best

Keith

Hi,

I have one and after dicussing with the doc (one of the best in the country) decided to leave it in.

I had had problems getting it to heal and removing then can break the leg again in some cases plus the general risk of an op (MRSA again Rolling Eyes ) . In most cases the leg is stronger for it.

The down side is it rare but possible to have reaction later to the pin. You cant have a MRI scan and it if have a serious accident (which would break the bone anway) it can be much worse, bending or causing sprial fractures.
I was told never to take up parachuting unless I have it removed.
The longer they are in the harder they can be to remove.

So its really a personal decision and I would discuss or exact circumstances with the doc before deciding.

Regards
Charlotte
