PostPosted: 06:41 - 12 May 2007    Post subject: Ebay Scam?!?!?!?!?!?! Reply with quote

I dont know for sure but i think i have come across one.

I want to get back into doing rallies (Cambrian, Hafren etc etc) and my TS's wont be ready for ages and my Triumph tiger could do it but i want to have fun while im there, not kill myself

Anyway, i fancied a DR350 as they are great bikes, ultra reliable (watch Mondo Enduro, Terra Firma), easy to get bits for etc etc.

Found a nice looking DR350 on Ebay that was up for 700 quid that was a buy it now. Bike looked ok and was cheap so i thought great, i'll ask him a couple of questions about the bike and see where he is blah blah and maybe arrange summat about buying it. I even gave him my mobile number.

This is the reply i got.

------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------

The engine starts from the first time! The bike is in perfect working condition! I have to tell you that I'm currently out of town with some major business problems so pick up isn't an option. Sorry about that... Hope you will understand... But, you can still buy the bike... The selling price will be 700 pounds... For this price I will include free delivery of the bike anywhere in the UK. You will also have access to a refund policy on this transaction. However, before any delivery can be done we have to start the transaction on ebay so we can be both protected. In order to start the transaction on the eBay system I need to receive some details from you:
- your full name and address (for your invoice + delivery purposes)...
As soon as the above details will be provided I'll start the official transaction on eBay and they will notify you about this. You'll also receive important guidelines + instructions from them ( please go through them exactly ).
Will wait to hear from you. Thank you for your interest...
------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------

Now is it me being paranoid or does this not seem right? I mean it would cost loads to get a bike delivered, how would he arrange it being picked up and the likes if i cant do it myself? The list goes on. Oh, he also has no history.

Anyway, this is the bike

I wont add the blokes email or ad number cause he may just be genuine, we all have a life i guess but i dunno, just seems wrong. Gut instinct and the likes may have lost me a quite nice looking bike but there you go.

It doesn't feel right to you and you have to hand over money before seeing the bike. You know you have to walk away. There will be others.

If in doubt... leave it out!

I sold a car on ebay, I asked for £100 via PayPal as a deposit and the rest in cash on collection/delivery, I didn't faff or fanny about.

A bike delivery is usually around £100 in the UK, obviously prices differ depending on the distance e.g. London - Glasgow = £200

No wanting to penalize all African unique style/backwards/pigeon English speaking people who legitimately sell stuff on eBay, but if you see anything sold using this style of English or receive any communications written in this style RUN A MILE!

Tell tale signs include:
- Not being able to see product = No actual product.
- Seller having to start proceedings with ebay - Buyer has control not the seller.

i agree with stiffler, people have tried to buy from me using that style of english grammar and you can tell a mile off what theyre trying to do.

Most replies would be along the lines of "hi mate, the bike runs sweet, no problems with it, starts and runs first time everytime, feel free to have a look if your unsure before the auction ends, happy bidding"

Why would you sell an item on ebay as large as this which requires collecting by the buyer, when your not even going to be there at the time of collection?

id leave it mate Thumbs Up

I've seen loads of these, especially in the classified ads, but I can't work out the scam unless its as simple as asking you to pay up front and then nothing turns up?

Can't seem to find it now, maybe some mug has taken him up on the offer.

I'll have a guess that his feedback is nil. You'll see a lot of these scams in the posh cars section.

Scam, couldn't be more obvious if it was put in the message Rolling Eyes might be interesting to reply with something along the lines that you'll wait for them to get back home and discuss it then, their reply(if any) may be interesting Laughing

That's a scam. The seller needs none of your details to "start the transaction" what a load faeces. Tell him to spin Middle Finger
