 |
|
I found myself in a declining slide of magazinoid reading matter, so instead of reading what's lying round at work "Hello", "OK", "Grazia" and all those other weeklies with Frowning Spice on the cover* which don't even merit me bothering to put them in italics
So I have decided to reverse the trend, and go back to placing PROPER general interest magazines in our waiting rooms. In Ilford, there's already some rather tattered old copies of The Erotic Review, BSHand Bizarre.
In Victoria (a bit more upmarket) they at least keep current copies of FHM, etc. (but not Loaded) LOL
So I thought I might give punters something INTERESTING to read.
Plus at the same time, improve my own knowledge on general subjects and current affairs (especially international, of which I am woefully ignorant) ... so I have taken to buying random magazines in WH Smith.
Last week I left behind Newsweek which has a special global warming issue. Very interesting, and for what seems like FAR TOO LONG I actually read something that made me think, and feel.
I just finished this week's New Scientistand its damninteresting.
So suggestions for interesting purchases (non bike- or sex-related) would be welcome.
I'm not sure I could manage to appreciate much of Sweetbreads Fanciers Fortnightly, but I might at least extend the range of general knowledge amongst myself and the punting population of London.
*They have their uses. My fashion sense has, at least, improved since starting to read them. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

I'd love to help but on turning around in asda's I found that they have a shelf full of decent paperbacks for the same £4.
Perhaps a table full of them will get some repeat customers. If not for the great service then at least for the next chapter. ____________________ Tristan the wrote: just whipped off my trousers to find a big bruise on my arse, caused by matt rear ending me... |

National Geographic magazine is an interesting read. The photography in there is fantastic.
The punters probably won't be bothered to read long articles, so at least they can check out the photographs. |

I'm a big fan of New Scientist - been reading it for a few years now although it has been a few months since I last bought a copy. It sparked of an interest in science that years of school successfully managed to beat out of me through boredom. I now have a few science books on my bookshelf mainly astrophysics and a bit of quantum stuff. Got a couple of new one's - a Hawkings book and 'The Fabric of the Cosmos' to read on holiday soon.

if you like new scientist as its an intelligent read, id suggest 'the economist' magazine in newsagents, or www.economist.com
they have a science and technology section, but its mostly current affairs.
The thing i like is that most journalists in newspapers are just a generalist and so just mug up on a subject a bit to cover a story, whereas in the economist its actually written by an expert in that field. You notice the difference when you read an article about something you already know a bit about.
In a normal newspaper you can normally spot all sorts of things they have got wrong, but that just doesnt happen in the economist, so this inspires confidence when reading stuff that you dont know much about. ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

Aye, I picked up a copy of that BBC Focus, but only cos it had something like "How to commit the perfect Murder" on the front cover, LOL
... but purely only for research purposes, of course ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life.

I bought this thing called The Week today, which is kind of interesting, like bits of international news and opinions from all the newspapers, here and overseas.
And with an easy-to-read sound-bite type format, as well. Just right for punters not wanting to get interested in some long involved topic before their shag ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |
