I now earplugs posts come up on a regular basis, but I found this on another site and found it quite interesting.

There is a fair bit of advertising in it, that promotes a site that sells plugs,so if you dont like that......dont read it.

and on the right hands side are a few links, that review some of the plugs.

They're for racing purposes, mainly, as most drivers have them done so that their radio earplugs are molded into them, so that they can hear what's being said to them at anywhere from 15-200mph. Therefore, they need to be a good fit.

And the price is in Dollars, so halve it for the UK equivalent, it's not that bad for molded plugs that should last you years.

custom plugs are the way to go,far better than the disposables, they cancel out far more sound than the disposables as they fit better.

think i paid 60 quid for mine and they are one of my best biking purchases.

If you fit disposables properly there shouldn't be a difference in sound cancellation.

Shocked What a rip off! All those are is standard swim plugs, that people with ear infections and the like get to go swimming

They cost about 20 quid for a massive tub of the ear impression material that will do about 100 impressions, then around 10 quid to have the impressions made into a pair of swim plugs.

BTW im a audiologist and i use plugs like these, they are v v effective and last about 10 years

There was a fella doing these at BikeSafe in Cheltenham in April, I didn't keep his details because they were expensive and I'd just bought some new Sennheiser earphones.

This is a bloody good idea!

No need to take your eyes off the road for navigation and you get to block out the other noises too!

I find Howard Leight Laser Lite the best
https://www.ahsafety.com/images/products/295.jpg

Then Moldex 7800 "Spark Plugs" which I nick from work Laughing
https://www.sensorcom.com/uploads/images_products/1016.jpg

It feels wrong not wearing ear plugs now, even if I'm not going above 30. I don't get the tinitus after fast rides any more which is great Thumbs Up Will invest in some custom ear plugs when I get some money together.

I tend to find most plugs are too long, as I have short ear canals. As such I use Alpine MotoSafe Earplugs, and with them I can cut off the stem to the correct length! They're reusable, too.

potential for a money making sceme sir? mobile custom plugs? You could charge £40 a set, making 150% profit on your tube of goo and paying for the petrol to get to the punter!!! And you'd still be undercutting the majority of the market ( sorry if my maths is off, i am an art student after all )

Just try them all out yourself (get a trial pack for £6) and then buy a big tub of the ones you like:

i agree trial packs so you can try out a few different sorts are good.

thats how i found that i like these ones

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/10pr-Howard-Leight-Quiet-Earplugs-Ear-Plug-Snoring-Baby_W0QQitemZ320113453720QQihZ011QQcategoryZ42507QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

they are a bit different, as they have a solid core that you remove to put in your ear, and then put back in when the thing is in your ear, and they stay in place

for me they are a better fit and dont fall out the way normal squidgy ones do

Do you guys actually think there would be a market, say at the BMF if some audiologists came down, hired a stall and charged 40 quid for a pair of custom made moulds, and say gaurenteed them for 10 years?

You can use them again and again of cause

Ear plugs are limited in lots of ways not mentioned in the initial link.
Plugs limit the damaging noise only to a certain level.
There are also noises that damage hearing but are inaudible.

Some of the plugs can be very aggressive on the delicate lining of the ear canal which can lead to irritation and possible infection through prolonged and repeated use. Which would discourage the use of protection of any kind

Ear plugs should be sewn into the helmet then you can never forget to wear them.

The problem with hearing loss is that most folk do not think of it at the time only to find later on they cannot hear certain sounds.

You don't just go deaf.

Best route is to try several different styles and makes before buying in bulk.

I find 3M work the best and are most comfortable though are the most expensive.

Custom fit are perfect, though ensure you have proper 'earplugs' and not just casting material that some of the 'Stall' pikies sell at shows.
They must make a cast 1st then a plug is made from that.

If you are serious phone an audiologist clinic and get them fitted by a pro. This will not be cheap £100 but they work better and have filters that permit you to hear normal speech.

Thats very true, if you buy custom made ones, make sure the person taking the impression has a NHS or PARP qualification to take ear moulds, its actually quite a dangerous procedure if not carried out with the proper knowledge.

The route of a private audiologist is a expencive one, but its worth investing in to protect your hearing in later life - saying that wearing cheap plugs is better than nothing Thumbs Up

Personally i feel you should just give us audiologists more money Mr. Green
