I'm planning on a bit of Father/Son bonding in the Summer, and am planning a trip "Up the Mountain". Thumbs Up

I know there's a few forum members that live in the North Wales area.

I just wondered if anyone can recommend a decent B+B in the area.

Ideally in the Betws-Y-Coed (ish) or Nant Peris (ish) areas.

Thanks for reading. Thumbs Up

Can't recomend a B&B as such but I can recommend the Youth Hostel at Pen-Y-Pass, they do bed, breakfast, evening meals, packed lunches, have a bar, and are ideally placed for walking Snowdon or the Glyders. You no longer have to be a member to use the hostel, as father and son you could get the 2 bed private room as a "family room" so you wouldn't have to bunk-up in a male dorm. Showers and WC etc... are shared down the hall, you also get reserved, reduced rate parking at the Pen-Y-Pass car park. www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/wales/hostels/Pen-y-Pass/index.aspx

PS> I'm not a member anymore, but I think this is possibly their best placed hostel

Llanberis is the best bet but it depends on the route you want to take up Snowdon. Just go to the area and there are literally hundreds of B+B's there. Try a Google for "Snowdon B&B

I would suggest another mountain than Snowdon as its a shit hole and gets very busy in the summer. been up it on every route and it never gets any better.

Carnedd Llewelyn is much better as is Tryfan and they are just a stones through from Snowdon. Thumbs Up

Hmm, betws-y-coed is a bit of a shithole to be honest, probably a better bet would be places in Bangor Thumbs Up

Theres a great B+B just towards the entrance of the A5 next to the pier called the Y Garth. Really nice couple run it, not too badly priced and they really go the extra mile. I stayed there for my resit last summer.

If you're coming on the bikes the run to betws is really quite pleasant, takes about half an hour. Also very close to Ogwen lake which is a picturesque body of water between about 3 mountain/hill things which is usually swarmed by walkers so its gotta be a good thing.

Also bangor is literally the crossover to anglesey, which is by far more picturesque and interesting scenery wise.

As above, or porthmadog. Or Bangor Uni student halls are open (used to be?) over the summer.

Far too many people up there in the summer.

Actually I've just remembered I did stay at a B&B in Snowdonia, about 10 years ago it was nice and I've since been back to the farm and the same nice people run it. www.snowdonia-wales.net/acc/serv/bryntirion/default.asp

Lol, aye. It was absolutely full of faux log cabins and walkers who looked like bill oddy. Not exactly somewhere id want to stay.

lol @ Betws being a shit hole too.

There's a youth hostel about a mile up the road from Betws that I stayed in earlier this year, at Swallow Falls I think. Not bad but I did have a seat nicked from a bicycle, make sure your stuff's properly locked up.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Thumbs Up

I done the usual "Google" but ended up with a shed load of possiblities, that's why I decided to ask. It's always better to get a recommendation.

Didn't even consider the Hostel at Pen-Y-Pass, I just assumed you needed to be a member of the YHA. Bet it gets busy though.

I get where your coming from Fing', problem is my Boy's not been anywhere near even a steep hill before (living in "Flatest Norfolk" now).
Tryfan is an actual climb rather than a walk. I think I'd better play safe first go out and see how he gets on. I've also not been "In the Mountains" for many years either, so any knowledge I may have gained in the past is long forgotten too.

I'm gonna (or am planning to) take him up the Miners Track, and then maybe down via the Pyg Track. This is the route I/We took many years ago when I was with the Air cadets, so it's a bit of a nostalgic trip for me too. Laughing

I considered going up via Crib Goch, but also I think this will be too much for my boy to take in. I didn't want top get on top of the knife only for him to bottle it.

Thanks again.

No, as you say not worth the risk going over Crib, last time I went over that way someone had tripped and fallen and they were waiting for the rescue helicopter. Plus it can be very busy up there.

You sure you didn't walk up the pyg track and back down the miners those years ago? That's the more traditional route, and easier. The thing is with them you start almost halfway up the mountain at the car park. It'll be a decent effort for a young lad still.

The Rhydd Ddu (sp) path from the South is pretty good, you can combine it with climbing Aran which is scrambley and quite fun. Took some photos doing that route last May https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=85774&highlight=snowdon

Possibly... Thinking

It's just that I can (vaguely) remember being "Higher" up on the way up, looking down on the Lagoons, rather than being "Level" with them.

Might be mistaken though... It was 1979 after all. Whistle

You walk alongside the lakes on a wide-ish gravel track for a good part of the miners', then climb up. The pyg looks down on them, Pyg up / Miners down sounds about right.

I've stayed in one called Bryn Bella in Betws. It's across the river from the main part of the town but there is a suspension bridge across so it's a 10-15 minute walk into town.

A few too many fulffy toys about the place but the people are really friendly. He let us keep the bikes in his garage too. This year we arrived for the Dragon rally (in February) covered in snow. He hung all our gear up on his Aga too.
