This might seem a little stupid but this is a genuine question about a trip down to dorset that i might be forced to make in the summer....on my shituma 125 (clone of a cg clone)....from coventry in the midlands..

...Now i know this isn't the most sensible of trips to make on what must be the most unsensible of bikes but i had planned to be on my big bike by now, but house moves, new jobs (with less money!) and other costs have conspired to hold that DAS money just out of reach Crying or Very sad

....add to this the fact that we sold our espace (for our many children) in anticipation of me being on the big bike and bought a normal 5 seater which means that there's no longer room for me in the car, and you can begin to see my predicament. Following behind on my ZZR didn't seem like a bad idea really...but following behind on the shituma doesn't seem to have the same appeal somehow...but i'm going to have a go 'cause its either this or i don't join the family for the holiday and it might be fun!

Now what i wanted to know was what kind of things should i be thinking about, obviously i'm aware that i can't go on motorways, but then we went via mainly 'A' roads (fosseway?) last year so this shouldn't be a problem, how much petrol will i need ( its basically a cg so will 1 tank of fuel get me there?), will i need to carefully toughen my arse to make the journey bearable?

Any thoughts or info would be appreciated

cheers guys

Jo

All i can say is have fun.
Have done yorkshire to the south coast several times on 100cc bikes. You just have to remember that you need frequent rest stops to give the bike a bit of a rest.
Plenty of online sites, AA, RAC, Green Flag on which you can plan the route.
Not much else you need if there is going to be a car taking all the stuff.

Might have been an idea to actually pass your test before buying the zzr.

Sell the zzr and use some of the money to do your das. Then at the very least you'd be able to take the 125 on the motorway. Also if there is any money left over you could still buy something bigger, you can pick up a slightly scruffy but perfectly usable 500 commuter for £400.

If i hadn't bought the ZZR when i did i would never have been able to afford one, i had the money at the time and had to use it on the things that i wanted before it got swallowed by the money monster that lives in my bank account...i won't be selling the ZZR its lovely, its perfect in every way and exactly what i wanted...i will pass my test eventually,if by some miracle or divine intervention this happens before the summer great, if not its the shituma until i do

cheers

touring on a 125 is fun.....you get to enjoy the scenery a bit more...

i did st.helens to Ambleside, took in a bit of grizedale forest ( the lake district) and came home via the fleetwood/Lytham coast road all in all about 200/250ish miles and loved every minuite of it! ( was riding a Honda CA125, Bit like the CB, but 'custom' crusier styleing).

Just be ready for the numb bum syndrome.....and an mp3 player wouldnt go a miss also.

...cheers guys, although i knock the shituma all the time its pretty good at getting me around locally now that i serviced and replaced all the faulty (new!) parts that came with it....

....my concerns were about whether the little engine would cope with an extended journey ( i reckon 3.5- 4.5 hrs) and how long the petrol in my tank would last ( cause i dont have a fuel gauge)- from what i can remember about CG's isn't the tank range something like 150- 200 miles?

cheers again

Petrol range is not a problem. Stick it on main tank, run it till you hit reserve then fill up. You will soon find out just how far you can go.
On a long run you will find it should use less juice than your round town runs.
You will most likely find you will stop a lot sooner than when it runs onto resverve... Numb bum and all that.

you shouldn't have any dramas at all, i once did a trip when i was a little lad on a 50cc bike that took me 3 days basically non stop Very Happy
great fun, have a few rest stops and don't ring the bike out the whole time and i dare say you wont have any issue,

you could always sell the 125 to pay for your course???

...cheers guys, i'll let you know how it goes....i'm going to have a trial trip either next weekend or the one after, downs to the cotswolds (1.5hr or so away) so i'll let your know how it goes...

...as for selling the shituma, i had thought of that, the only problem is if i do that i won't be able to get to the DAS school which is in hinkley (about 20 miles away)...

I'm hoping that i'll get some tax back soon from the new job, i'm on some crazy tax code so if all goes to plan i should have enough to pay for the DAS, if not i'm just going to go and sit my test on my 125cc and will then restrict the ZZR. I've been out on the bike and practicing for 6 months now so reckon that i'm competant enough to pass

anyway

thanks again

Jo

I personally wouldn't follow a car on a CG clone, as you'd be left behind on long uphill stretches, and would be sitting in traffic when you don't need to be. I'd rather set off earlier and go at a pace that the bike is happier at, arranging to meet at the destination at the same time.

As others have said, don't worry about the fuel - start with a full tank, find fuel when you've switched to reserve. In reality, you'll probably find that you'll want to give your arse a break after a couple of hours which will be maybe 100 miles, so just top the tank up and have a cuppa.

What is wrong with you people.

I have covered 16,000 miles since 1st july last year....i've even made it upto edinborough (Well about 15/20 miles out). Nothing should stop you.....And all them miles are on my 125 (that i bought brand new last july and still own to this very day)

Just make sure you know where the service stations are so you can plan your fuel stops, arse stretch stops and cig breaks (if you smoke that is).

Also, as someone previously said, an mp3 player doesn't go a miss..and the odd mars bar in a layby Razz

If you really want to be a crazy 125 tourer guy then you could look a bit strange and strap a cushion to your seat Mr. Green
