This is posted on behalf of a friend as it is a while till I can do my A2!

What bike would be best to get after taking the A2 restricted licence route? He likes naked bikes, currently riding a Honda City Fly (CLR125) and taking the A2 in a couple of months.

He says "its pointless getting a 400 because he would only get 3/4 of the power out of it whereas a 250 would hardly need restricting"

What do you think?

If he gets a harley just make sure he knows that his beard will grow 7 inches longer and his trouser size will double as soon as he sits on it...

He needs to remember all about the Torque - that is a very important figure.

If you have a 50bhp bike with say 35lbft of torque that when restricted gives you 33bhp and 25lbft torque or the choice of a bike with 70bhp and 45lbft torque that is restricted to 33bhp and 30lbft of torque which would you take?

A 250 2 stroke bike can make 60hp quite easily.

A 650cc cruiser might make under 33hp.

Size of the engine isn't really important.

If the bike is going to be restricted, I'd personally go for something that gave you a decent increase in power when derestricted, so you almost get 'two bikes in one'.

If he likes the city fly, consider the DR350 for a bike that doesn't need restricting.
Alternatively, something like a hornet would give you a decent increase in power when you did derestrict.

I just decided to add that option, I seriously hope he doesn't get a harley!

Get him an er5 or cb500 then. Thumbs Up

I had the er5 restricted and she was a great step-up bike from a 125. Don't get me wrong, the power of the 33bhp got mundane after 3 weeks but those first 3 weeks I'll never forget. Thumbs Up

That doesn't make sense. Confused How could it be miles better without the restrictors and hard to tell the difference at the same time?

Some may be surprised at this, but I'd recomend a 400.

Don't get a 250 4 stroke supersports! The parts are the biggest hassle but the ride is the most rewarding! All handling, no power, you have to work for it Thumbs Up Rolling Eyes

Put it this way, he wouldn't need to restrict my bike at all.

I've only had it running a couple of months and already I can feel it saving my licence! Smile

Get the biggest effing bike he can get insurance for. Enjoy it and dont go mental. Seriously everyone has this stigma about having to go for a smaller bike when you pass your A2, i went straight onto a Z750 with no trouble and ive enjoyed every second of it. Ive come off, ive gone a bit too quick and i can honestly say ive learnt so much in about 7 months now. Granted im not the worlds best but im not terrible and it also puts you in good sted for two years time when you can have any bike you want. Just get whatever you feel comfortable on!

Some people enjoy 'going mental' as such Smile.

Also, just because you were fine going onto a 100hp ish bike, doesn't mean everyone will be.

33bhp my friend. Got to keep it legal. I never rode a 125 either. It just a frame of mind you have to get into and dont over ride it. If your friends a relativly sensable guy and not too much of a racer then i think he should get what he wants, although get him to stick with nakeds or he'll be paying a lot when he drops it. Thumbs Up

Not everyone drops their first bike. I had a GSXR400 for my first and never dropped it. I don't think there's a problem getting a fully faired bike as a first one. Just chuck some R&G's on it and be careful.

Or get a bike with already scratched fairings and don't be bothered that your bike doesn't look like a mantle-piece ornament!
