Looking for somewhere to get a couple of cheap mountain bikes from, found ones for £50 but was hoping for something slightly cheaper. Anyone know of where to buy really really cheap bikes? Doesn't matter too much if it's mountain bikes or not as long as there's two bikes exactly the same as each other and they both need to have steel frames.

No need to point out that with cheap bikes all the parts are going to be crap, they've only got to make it from London to Brighton once. Razz

Why do they have to be *exactly* the same?

My g/f just picked up a perfectly serviceable bike from the Tip for £5. It's an old Claude Butler steel frame, just needed headset tightening and a few new cables.

What are you making?

Try your local freecycle (freecycle.org) - people are always giving away bikes etc.

A tandem of sorts; take two bikes and join them together side by side. Should result in interesting braking and ability to go around corners. Laughing Both bikes being the same should make it easier to make and to ride so can't get cheap ones from freeads or anything off freecycle.

Can't see you getting much cheaper than that new.

I do know what the plans are, but not sure if you would need identical bikes? Identical gears shouldn't be a big issue, similar with brakes etc , presuming each one will be seperately controlled.

You can usually get bikes free on freecycle that need a bit of work - there's one in my garage from freecycle (was gonna be chucked if it wasn't picked up that night) that you're welcome to.

For joining the frames together having the crossbar etc in the same place on each would make it easier, and for joining the steering together having the forks, stem and bars the same on each bike would make it work better than if each side is slightly different.

Should be possible to make it work with two bikes that are the same size as each other, if we can find somewhere with cheap new ones then that should make it easier.
