I've been getting quotes on 4 bikes. Hornet 600, Fazer 600, Bandit 600 and SV650. The quotes for the bandit and the SV are good. Around £400 with 0 NCB (I'm only 17)

quotes for the hornet and fazer are well over £1000!

I can possibly understand this for the fazer, bt the hornet is pretty similar to the bandit (or so I thought)

anyone care to enlighten me?

cheers

Iirc the Hornet and Fazer are quite a bit more powerful.

Hornet and (earlier) Fazer both have hooligan bike status.
Also both are nearer 100 claimed hp whereas the bandit and SV are around 60.
40hp is quite a difference.

yeah I've just checked the specs and the hornet and fazer are almost 100, bandits 78 and SV is 70.

I didn't know about the hooligan status

does anyone know where I can get an idea of insurance groups?

And how times change...doesn't seem so very long ago that the Bandit was the hooligan tool.

it sill is regarded as the hooligan tool, the 1200 more so then the 600, also the power of the bandit is not 60 its nearer the 80 (a 10 year old - 65,000 mile example pulled 77bhp on a dyno)

and as proven by a rideout with a mate on a Hornet, there was nothing in it between his Hornet 6 and My Bandit 6... IMO Bandit is still the original hooligan tool Smile

40hp is quite a difference, when in reality I'd say a bandit is a realistic 75bhp. And I'd say a hornet is probably 85bhp.

10bhp is not 40bhp.

Hornets are quicker than bandits, they also have more fun handling. But the bandit has the bad reputation. It is the original hooligan bike. (Bar the gixxer 1100) the Fazer is a bit different, slightly more power but then it has a different image.

Insurance quotes have built in quirks, I think you found some.

Also, bandits are pretty cheap to fix when you crash them. Hornets less so.

Crash your bandit, lever, bars if you're unlucky, plastic engine cover and clock bracket. All are available as aftermarket parts, probably not costing enought to bother claiming for. There are companies that sell almost nothing but bandit crash spares, they even do special reinforced crankcase covers so you can bin them repeatedly without having to replace them.

Hornets go with plastics and there are much fewer aftermarket parts, therefore you claim on your insurance.

All reflects on the premiums.

As I recall, Bandits are also considerably cheaper.

wish i could. but its 1200 a year for the hornet and only £420 for the bandit and SV. I think I know which one to avoid as much as I would like on. Plus my budget for a bike is £1000-£1500 and I've already decided I can get a decent SV or Bandit for that money

Agreed. The Fazer or Hornet aren't that much better to warrant an extra £780 insurance.

But make sure you ride both before you buy, if you can. Some people like a v-twin and some don't.

Yeah the hornet is definitely not £780 better.

Excellent post Stinkwheel, nicely deduced.

Definitely get a testride on each, the Bandit is quite revvy, but I find it's very versatile, you can keep the revs low if you wish, but there are decent benefits to be had from raping it.

Not ridden an SV but it'll be a very different kettle of fish. Less power, but more desirable in my book.

Having given the matter some brief thought...

My last bike was a GS500, a Twin, felt more "grunty" than the bandit, the bandit a IL4, is very revvy, you really have to be over 9k revs to be shifting at all, it picks up around 7k... If you rape the bandit, which i do Smile it should be faster than the SV, but then i prefer the sound of a twin...

Also my only ever points have been on my Bandit IL4... I think its revvy nature makes me anyway ride like a bit of a twat...

I suppose the hooligan image is still justified Smile

Compared to an SV, definitely. Laughing

I'd get the Bandit myself, as Stinkwheel's excellent post pointed out, it's going to cost next to nothing if you drop it, and you may well do - I'm assuming you're a new rider. Plus it's got a bit more power, the delivery is more exciting, and everyone knows IL4s sound better than twins. Mr. Green

Thing is with bandits.
The fuckers have a fair bit of weight to them.
IMO the hornet is a lot easier to move around.
But thats out of the question anyway.

Give the SV a go. Vtwin Torque will have you grinning, and still being able to push it will help.

Looking at both the same bikes myself.

psst.
i've never really seen a bandit wheelie at the balance point either, you don't really need too because they stay up happily on the rev's.

Good job we've got an expert here!

Bandits are wheelie monsters. So much so I recommend that anyone buying a second hand bandit 1200 checks the head bearings and fork seals thoroughly!

I often think that to myself, which is more hooligan-like. Bandit or RD.

I suspect the old school handling and brakes probably makes it the RD.

We all know what the Original Hooligan is! Yes it's the 98 R1.

Some say the RD350lc was the spawn of the 98 R1 bred with an Aerox.
