Posted: 22:25 - 15 May 2007 Post subject: Carrying extra helmet for pillion |
 |
|
Hi people,
Has anybody carried an extra helmet with them (ie. for a pillion you are picking up from somewhere) safely for a significant distance without using a topbox??
Ive got a problem in that im hoping to got to the wsb at Silverstone on the 27th but i have to pick up a friend of mine who's at uni in Nottingham, and i live nearly 200 miles on the south coast near Brighton!
I am going to have to carry an extra helmet with me somehow for a 3 hour motorway journey. Ive used the arm through the helmet technique before on much smaller journeys but im not sure its that safe to use on the motorway.
Im riding a G2 zx6r which has pillion handles that could possibly be used to secure the helmet to, but i know that i'll be paranoid about it falling off behind me
Ive got sports panniers and rucksacks but nothing big enough to hold a helmet.
Ive seen pictures of cargo nets being used but they look nowhere near secure enough IMO.
Has anybody got any suggestions?? Anybody used the though the arm method on long motorway stints without problems??
Any help would be appreciated here. If i cant take a lid im gonna have to go on my own and that aint half as fun.
Cheers
Ben |

Cargo nets work fine.
Used it a few times doing London to Nuneaton and back, as well as other shorter journeys. ____________________ Pictorgraphicalfantastical |

Get a belt, put it around your waist and thread it through the chin piece/visor hole of the helmet. You could have it behind you or in your crotch, though I expect the former would be the most comfortable ____________________ the warped one: This is a follow up from the thread 'my willy hurts' |

Gaffer tape the fucker to your petrol tank. Take the visor off it and put it in your jacket, around one of your hips. Just make sure you have enough fuel to get there
Seriously, put it in a backpack, then loosen the straps on the back pack, and slide the whole lot over the tail. Tighten the straps, and then secure it with rope

The danger with the "on the arm" method is that if you have an accident, it's going to make a mess of your arm.
I'd use the cargo net route - or put it in my topbox ____________________ Change is inevitable - except from a vending machine.

Another vote for the cargo net. You can get them for a couple of quid, or sometimes "free" with a magazine. I think I've bought at least 3 now, due to being caught out without one, so I have one with me at all times now.
I've carried a pillions helmet on the back in all weathers, and on A roads, B roads and motorway, no problem!
(Just for the record I'd avoid carrying a helmet over the arm, or even strapped to your waist for obvious reasons if the worst should happen) ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

Joys of a CB500...
Lift up the seat, and underneath you'll find two hooks. Hook the helmet's D-piece over the hook (or poke the hook thru the hole in the latch-key on quicklock lids), close the seat. Helmet hangs on side of bike just behind your knee. Have carried 2 helmets, one on each side, via these hooks for 40+ miles happily, leaving my topbox and tankbag free for more important stuff (Jack Daniels, clothes, more Jack Daniels...)
Haven't a clue what other bikes have em... ____________________ FAB-Racing MiniMotoSidecars - Back with a vengeance - F1 Class 2011...

Cargo net.
Buckle it to the grab rail with the chin strap.
Lock the (done up) chin strap under the seat.
