I didn't know where to post this, so stuck it here, in the Random Forum.

Along the same lines... Picture the scene...

4 Ton Ambulance, responding to a "Red Call" (on Blues and Two's).

Traffic in local town sees, and hears, said Ambulance and duly pulls over to let it through. The first car in the "On-Coming" traffic (Incidentally a WPC on her way to work... perfect witness) "Flashes" said Ambulance, as if to say... "The way is clear, come through!".

Only upon seeing the car flash, this old boy (79 yrs old, in his FIAT Punto) Pulls STRAIGHT OUT of a side road WITHOUT even looking at (or even HEARING) what was coming. Rolling Eyes

Now... How the Fuck can't you see a 4 ton fluorescent box, let alone hear it with the "Wailers" going I'll never know.
"Sorry mate... I didn't see you" doesn't quite wash in this case!

NO-One seriously hurt, but he did need cutting out, and my station is less one Ambulance for (quite) a while.

But what chance would he have had seeing a bike? Shocked

Oldsters should have re-tests every 2 years once they reach 65.IMO

Dunno if that's really ideal. Thats like saying that under 25's should be retested every year because they are the highest statistic.

My gran is 82 and has a full cat bike licence, still drives and did a track day last year.

I read on the bbc that 1 in 3 drivers would fail an eye test but they dont bother to take one. Its a bit harsh targetting the over 65's.
Who's going to pay for all these retests?

old people behind the wheel suck big time, pulling out infront of bike. Imagine if the old person pulled out in front of a bike instead of ambulance could have been bad.

old drivers should have some sort of testing

like maybe a eye & ear test to comply with the ambient(sp) sounds on roads

Just thank the Lord you're not wise enough to be in your 60's.

If it is to be applicable then I'd say 70's and done via the GP so only those with registered health conditions need be bothered.

My Father in law is 68 and still climbs up trees and fells them (aboroculturist and private woodland manager) tell him he has to have and annual test and he'd kick 7 bells out of you.

Why don't we just rename this country the United Nazis State of Americania Rolling Eyes

a completely empty and standard, short base, low roof transit is not far shy of two tons. Add equipment, more substantial bodywork etc etc and i can forsee it being four ton gross weight. (I do also recognise that the picture is of a merc derived ambulance though)

Its also borne out by the fact that a friend of mine is looking to train as a paramedic and has been told she needs a category C licence (which is the category for vehicles over 3.5 ton gross)

I think the WPC should be getting a slap and no one has even mentioned her yet!!

Stupid bint for flashing like that, didn't she know the highway code!? I've seen many occasions where flashing has or almost has caused more harm than good... Rolling Eyes

Aye...

Thats a dull one. Setting an arbitrary upper age for retesting is as contentious as the existing limits re. insurance age categories.

One thing more annoying than old people (I qualify that by adding) who cannot drive; are wanks (usually in BMW's or Porsches) who after everyone has pulled over, shoot out and pass people who've obviously only stopped to let the emergency vehicle past.

Its just a little cheeky. Thumbs Down

I was just thinking that myself. If she was to investigate an accident and a driver said somebody had flashed them so they presumed it was safe to pull out then she would no doubt report them for driving with undue care.

I'd actually love to be an ambulance driver. How hard is it to get into the job?

Why? It looks very stressfull job, you have to deal with the dead, dying & injured while morons abuse and assault you.
Its not just a case of hurtling around with the lights and sirens going.

This reminds me of a clip from one of those cop car programs (maybe Roadwars) where an police car with full livery was on blues which makes the headlights flash alternatley and a driver waiting to turn across the road thought it was flashing them to allow them to pull across the road in front of them!! Nealry crashed, but not quite!

Well ALL under 21's have to have the restricted license regardless of experience, it's the same thing. How can restricting all youngsters be right and asking old people to have tests every couple of years be wrong? Sounds like you're discriminating against young people to me Thinking As you said in the other thread about youngsters being shortsighted etc.

Also when most 65+ people passed their test. Assuming they passed at 25, that would mean they passed in 1967! When rush hour was when a dozen cars go past a minute......on a motorway. The roads and cars have changed so much since then.
