I am looking for a big bike, i've only recently passed my licence, but have been on a NSR 125 (1999) for 8 months now. Money is not a major problem. Can anyone suggest a good bike which is powerful in lower rev's as well as higher (offcourse!) on about say no more than 2.5 K (looking at another at least 1k for insurance). Thanks

You want a bike with plenty of torque, so disregard most IL4 sports bikes, unless you want a litre bike, but that's a big step.

V twins are torquey, so maybe something like a Firestorm or maybe a TRX850, or if you're aiming a bit lower power-wise, an SV650 or GPZ500.

don't go too big just yet, i would say a 4 would be fine, you'll think its quite torqy compared to the nsr but a nice little sv400 or sv650 even a honda bros/hawk you'll like. the good thing about the vtwins s hey are generally very narrow and quite light

I'd agree the NTV is really narrow compared to the CBR, but then V2 are buggers to work on manufacturers save space by putting things in the V , and you can barely get your hands in , V4s are worse I wonder how bad the RC211V V5 is to work on,

some of the 500s are fairly worthy , esp CB500 , everything above is either an SV which everybody will call a girls bike or when yer gonna get a real bike kid, or an IL4 ,

ZX7R has to be if ya want low end torque and still pulling at 140 mph +

other half went from a vfr400 to the zx7r.. yeah from a 125 its a big step but the 7r aint exactly flighty, its a heavy machine thats very stable and very planted and can be had for your budget

Oh and very oddly can be cheaper than a lot of 600's to insure, my other half is 22.. its cheaper for him to insure his P reg 7R than my x reg 6R Shocked

TBF prety much anything over 400 cc will feel like it has loads of torque compared to an NSR125, so many be worth having a look at Bandits/Hornet 600's.

CB500 - horribly underrated.

If I were less socially responsible I 'd be looking for an inexpensive CB500S with an ART can... Smile

I went from a DT125R to my Thundercat. The jump wasn't bad at all because the power delivery of the IL4 is very controllable and you'll only go as quick as you make it go.

Considering going for a supermoto next as I miss the handling of my DT.

depends what you want it for

i think 600 sportbikes with inline 4 cylinder engines are good on country roads as they have good power at high revs

but singles and twins are better in town

id be tempted to split the budget and get two bikes (in fact i did split exactly the same budget as you)

one for in town commuting, and another for weekends

best of both worlds

there are loads of advantages to doing it this way.

id disagree there, my twin is a whole lot more snatchy and unpleasant in the town than my IL4 750, have to slip the clutch just to ride at 30! but on the twisties it comes into its own and is way more fun. still though id agree on the 2 bike idea, defo the way forward Thumbs Up

id favour the Bandit 6, just because ive got one. Went straight to it after passing my test. Rode a RS125 before that. Fantastic bike and insurance isnt to bad as no fairings etc to replace if it goes down the road

Regards

John

I am thinking of putting my Bandit up for sale, its a 1999 plate 600 in black.

Would fit in with your budget, and you could insure it for under 2.5 k,

Cheers

Jon
