On my way back from a little ride around this afternoon, i came across a hump back bridge i had been over a few times, all i could remember of it was that there was a straight run off on the other side and no turnings near by...

So i hit it at a fair old speed, aiming to crest it nicely... The drop cut away further than i remembered and before i knew it i was flying..

Both wheels were definitely airborne for what seemed like 2 seconds, but was most likely less, and i cleared the bridge completely. I went back and asked the people sitting in the pub garden with a view if i was imagining things, and they confirmed i was something like a meter airborne to much amusement...

Gotta say it felt pretty good, and a surprisingly soft landing. I have crested many bridges and lips, but this was my first flight...

Which brings me to my question

Any BCF'ers got their pilots wings? Smile

Speed bumps can normally get some height off of them failing that in the same as your case hump back bridge, they got a nice one out by Upper Heyford a mate snapped his swingarm on it and we even got an ax airborne there (hit it at about 80 lol). Cool

That feeling when the bike goes weightless and the the engine revs up is amazing Mr. Green

Got airborne near rivvy, and i was shit scared of an impending tank slapper. It was only a foot or so (the front was higher), over a junction that looked like the hills of san francisco.

I've had my car fairly airborne, too. Thankfully the shocks didn't bottom out.

Jack

PS, upon reading the title, i thought you'd gone and bought a monkey bike!

At first I thought he'd had a shag on his bike, not quite the mile high club!

Got airborne on my GPZ750R on a bumpy back road the other year there, had got the front nicely off the ground, over a crest, earlier in the run and was expecting more of the same on this other bit; so, balls of feet on pegs ready for it and stood up and moved weight forward as the front lifted, but before it landed, felt a bump from the back as the rear wheel touched down Shocked Front then came down and after one very lazy shake of the bars, was on my way again...driver of the car coming the other way, looked quite shocked Embarassed Twisted Evil Wink

Some sense kicked in at that point and I DIDN'T go back and try it again...

So far, on the ZXR, have only got the front off the ground over a crest, but there were people on the other side to witness the gentle arc this time though Mr. Green

managed to get airborne from a the way a roundabout ?'cambers'? it was only about an inch, wouldn't of noticed but upon landing, I was to the left of my previous position, and it was my first near experience of anything remotely resembling a tank-slapper. Good on you tho, bet it felt ace Razz

Once or twice, but the most fondly remembered...

When I had my first ZZR I rode up around Wales with a friend, we'd passed through Llangadog and were heading up toward Myddfai on the back roads (I grew up in that areaish so knew it fairly well). He was ahead of me on a GPz1000RX streetfighter he'd built himself and was doing pretty well as we were mainly on twisties. There's a fairly long straight section with a double humpback at the end going over two streams. As you approach the bridges there's a roadsign warning of a series of bends ahead, but in fact they are the best part of 2/3 of a mile further on, so more than enough braking distance. Upshot is, he hit the bridges whilst braking hard, I flew past. Literally. Apparently he'd never come quite so close to shitting hiself as that moment, according to him being overtaken by an 1100cc motor screaming its nuts off at head height is a singularly memorable experience Laughing

Sort of. Id been going offroading with a mate of mine, and i was more then happy wheelying up and down the quarry we were in and going up the hills (to a fashion) and generally fucking about.

Hes used to doing all the jumping about pallaver and eventually talked me into doing it going into a field.
Turned out the bit i hated most was getting over the drainage ditch at the edge of the field to get back to 'launch side'.

But i managed a good 20 foot odd jump which must of been about a meter high.

Landings are not so much fun Neutral

As for road bikes if i stumbled upon a good humpback id give it a go, but usually crests i find i wheely off of (with some help from the clutch). The one out of bethesda i can snap the front up at about 130 in 5th Very Happy LaughingMr. Green

Hump back bridge at the side of shugborough Hall, on a bend so you have to hit it on an angle or you end up in a field. Me and a couple of mates used to have competitions on how far we could jump.

Always had a spotter on the bridge to spot any approaching cars. It was a good 15years ago so the roads were much quieter then.

Used my KMX125 to start with, but things got interesting when I got the KLR600. Even did a few 2up jumps. Shocked

There's a big hump in the road on the scenic route home from work/uni which I always get airborne over. It's not fantastic though and the visibility of the other side is pretty crap so I could do with finding a better jump somewhere else Laughing

there are a couple of little hump backs near me that I sometimes go and play on. It is good fun ( if a little naughty ) to take people along with me who don't know about the little jumps and see them in my mirrors wet themselves going over at speed.

I've had it up only about 6 inches, how shite am I? It's only a wee lunch ramp, sorry bridge onto a very bumpy landing area, every landing results in a waggle of the bars.

About two years ago I took Avenger (my better half) out on the Sprint ST and going up a hill I opened it up, not noticing the hump back bridge sign. Apart from my hands on the bars, me, Avenger and the bike all flew independantly for a second before coming back together on landing. I reached down and touched her leg to check she was still there.

When we stopped for tea at Rothbury a little while later I pretended that it was intentional but I don't think she believed me, especially when I picked up the mug of tea and shook the top inch out before I got it to my lips.

I used to deliberately time it so my GPZ overtook cars in midair on a 'rollercoaster' type bit on my way home from work when I was staying with my folks in the summer vacation.

I owned an MZ Baghira a couple of years ago which had a foot of suspension on each end so you could say I seldom missed an oppertunity to get it airborne.

Mind you, you had to work pretty hard to get it in the air, needed to carry some speed in, largely because the suspension was too good. There is a railway bridge fairly near my house with a 'tabletop'. Used to be a personal challenge to see if I could clear the top of it entirely but you needed to be doing a good 70mph to do so.

I wouldn't advise tabletop-bridges on a road bike though. If I wasn't committed enough and clipped the top it used to rattle my teeth something shocking, I suspect a 'normal' bike would have torn its sump off.

Done it a few times.
Over a hump-back bridge i go over quite a lot, had a pretty boring day so i opened the throttle and went at it at around 60.
Front wheel came up very quickly first and second wheel followed but no way near as high, kind of an airbourne wheelie, was definately a cheek clencher.

Was on a rideout another time and we were all going pretty fast down a b road, suffice to say 35 bikes one after another all got air miles Laughing
