Hi all , this is my first post on here.

Last week i failed my 1st test and have another booked for the end of next week.

I failed for not using the lifesaver correctly and would like you lot to answer these questions please as i want to know before i see my instructer.

1. When turning left onto a minor road am i right in saying i would do a lifesaver before changing lane and again before turning?
Part of me thinks there would be no point looking before you turn as there wouldnt be any space for a vehicle between me and the curb.

2. My mate says he was told to do 3lifesavers before turning on to a minor road? Surely this is one to many.

Thanks in advance, and yes, i should already know this but its what i failed on so i obviously didnt listen enough.

Here my bike

Ok for turning left I was taught.

Right Mirror, Left Mirror, Left Shoulder, Indicate, Adjust Speed, Left Shoulder, Turn.

For turning right

Left Mirror, Right Mirror, Right Shoulder, Indicate, Adjust Speed, Right Shoulder, Turn.

These both count for doing a lane change, but yes you are definitely meant to check just before you turn.

Basically, do a lifesaver every time you are about to change road position.

The last one on the left turn is so you can check there isn't eg. someone bombing up the pavement on a bicycle, or so I'm told.

Crappy MS paint drawings FTW.

I was taught to Left LS check just before committing to the left turn in case someone is stepping off the pavement...

I found in my town the life saver before turning was getting really annoying and actually affecting my riding.

Although i did carry it all the way through my test, i did mention to the examiner i didnt like it and would have had more control of the bike without it. I could tell he wanted to agree but in test conditions, that's the rules.

I can usually see perfectly well whats happening on the pavement a few yards from the turn because im coming down that road anyway.
If you have mulitple turns because it's a built up area it does get tiedious and tiring.

simplest way is this, shoulder check each time you move a more than a metre each direction, and before all turns.

NOTE and EDIT , there are perculiar things you have to do to pass the test , but life savers should be something you should do , esp in built up areas , it seems alot of riders overtake me on the right when I'm indicating to the ride and hover around in my blind spot.

I kept getting told off also for not moving my head enough but on the CBT I was commended for my great spatial awareness. The big visor on the old Shark Xri I had helped also...

You just need to be "Showy" about doing the checks for the test. I found myself checking, then remembering to point the helmet in the right direction so the examiner could see whilst already checking ahead and towards the ther side....

Confused

For test purposes it's also not a bad idea to position the mirrors so you have to move your head slightly to get a clear view in them. Just lets the examiner see you are doing it.
