Personally, I think the ZXR400 second the GSXR400. They both look the best unlike the retro VFR and the ZXR400 is pretty damn fast. The GSXR might not be the fastest but it does look awesome and 120 is enough for me at the moment.

Oh and I think the VFR sounds like a milk float Laughing .

Don't ever say that again! The gear driven cam V4 is one of the best noises in biking!! Laughing

Case in point https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQCDiysbLj8

Define "best".

Best for spares = ZXR400
Most Sought After = RVF400
Quickest = argueably ZXR400
Best for shorties = CBR400/VFR400
Best for tall people = GSXR400/ZXR400
Rarest = GSXR400
Cheapest = all about the same price really, bar the RVF
Most expensive to buy = RVF400
Most Reliable = VFR/RVF if kept serviced(those gear driven cams and V4 motor make it quick expensive), overwise about the same.
Most expensive to run = Either of the V4's(VFR/RVF)
Best Noise = VFR400 - Moriwaki Twin Stack Razz
Best looking = To each their own, but GSXR400 for me/ RVF running it close in second.
Most powerful as stock = All claimed as very similar, heard is hard to tune VFR's to decent power.

These are all opinions and info I've gathered over a couple of years with my and my mate's 400's, so hope it's helpful.

FOr more info consider registering for 400GB or just do a "best 400" thread search on there. Thumbs Up

I've got a 400 bandit and it does everything I need it to do Very Happy but it's also my first bike, so I've not got much to compare it to.

Marjay's guide is worth a read too:

Marjay's guide to 400cc sportsbikes

@Big_Ham - gixxer really best for tall people? I thought they were still pretty low. Only sat on mine though, not ridden yet... Sad

I've noticed their rarity ref: spares availability. Unfortunately, scarceness (is that a word? Confused ) does not increase their value!! Darn it. Laughing

i had a gsxr 400 ( L frame type) you are sitting over the bars so all your weight is on your wrists. (if you drive fast you won't notice Smile )

cbr/rvf you are sitting down low and 'in' the bike which is more comfortable and easier to live with.

as all these bike are pushing on i would go for any one with low milage and good condition

ive owned a vfr nc30 and ive got a gsxr400 at the minute. Both standard apart from race can. The vfr's gearing was so that you could do 60 in first which isnt bad for a 400 and it sounded amazing. The gsxr has a lot shorter gears and handles much much better than the vfr in my opnion, but it depends on your height as already discussed. Im 5ft 10 and the gixxer does make you put all the weight on your wrists which you feel after a long motorway ride, but dont even notice it on the twisties. GSXR is hard to get running right due to carb issues and what not whereas the vfr is twist and go,oil the chain etc and your sorted. But doesnt look as good in my opnion. I wish i hadnt sold the vfr because in the end i sacrificed reliability for looks, with no real change in performance. Only thing thats keeping me from selling the gixxer is that it now runs alright and has made me soooo much better on corners. My cousin had an rvf400 which was sweet and he had no troubles with that. Basically from experience: honda = reliable, fun, fast, not so good looking, suzuki = problematic, good looking, fast. Not sure about the kwakas as ive never ridden one but they look good is all i can say

well i own and ride an fzr400 and find it an awsome bike, its not running at full optimum as it needs a little bit of a setup but it has never let me down and is still running strong with 60,000 km's on the clock, i like all 400cc bikes as they are all very well built and awsome round corners.

Mine obviously!!

No in all seriousness if an NC30 is this much fun you're gonna like any of them! In the end, for me, it boiled down to the style I liked the most. I love the look of the single swingarm and retro-ness of the VFR400 so thats why I wanted one.

Having now done the valve clearances and balanced the carbs on one I know why people often knock the V4 for being compact and difficult to work on Crying or Very sad

Not having ridden the others I can only comment on the NC30 - It sounds great and seems very easy to ride. I'm 6 foot and although it's not perfectly suited to my size it's very comfortable on shorter journeys (2 hours max). The bike is fast enough to be fun and forgiving enough to chuck about into corners. It sounds like a turbo charged sewing machine but I love it!

Tim

ps: I was shocked to discover that a R6 weighs less than an NC30

Agreed! Went bike shopping with a mate recently and couldn't believe how light they are!! Bit too high in the seat though Neutral

Ha ha ha, get yourself a race-can on there m8, that'll stop grandma coming into the picture (tailering some clothing).

There are also injector needle converter kits, me bro had some put on his - make em sound way more beefy. Makes mine sound weak.

I'm all VFR as well, they're expensive to get hold off (for a really good example like mine I payed nearly 2 and a half for it Sick ...still cheaper than the RVF mind.

People say they struggle with parts, but I've not had too much bother with getting things like discs, pads, chain-sprocket sets, etc.

VFR\RVF's look the best to me. I love em - even compared to the newer bigger modern bikes, I'd still rather have one of these.

The best 400 is pretty much completely down to personal choice, but almost certainly the RVF is the most desired.

If it comes down to cost/reliability/parts/comfort then you'd be better of with a 600 if you a fan of all things sports or a 500 for a more budget commuter.

since this old post has been dragged up i might as well add to it.

i quite like supermotos now and i REALLY like the hypermotard but there no way im getting one of them Crying or Very sad so what supermotos are out there.

What are they like to ride compared to sports bikes

are they any good in the wet

are they any good in the winter

what is the best and how really available are the parts. im so confused !

take in mind im 17 and have no year no claims (will have one in December if all goes to plan)

edit: just on the ncb bonus thing if someones buys a bike and pays for a full year insurance and doesnt us it for a full year and then buys another bike and pays monthly until the full year is up will they get 1 years ncb then ?

If you pay for a years worth of insurance, and you don't claim then yes you will have a years NCB.

Though frankly you will probably be paying more that way, than you would insuring yourself with no NCB in the first place.

Look around and get some estimates, somewhere will have a reasonable quote, presuming you have no points or traffic offences and the bike isn't modded a ton you should have no problems.

DZ400, or DZ350s , indestructable light and cheap , big singles accelerate fast then get breathless up to 50-60mph , uncomfy need to be tall , zilch wind protection,

you can always go with Ebike insurance , on a PAYG policy they apparently let you change bikes incredibly easy as long as you keep paying and keep using it for 8 months you earn the 1Y NCB I think.

You could always convert a Yamaha WR400 motocross bike(excel rims, talon hubs etc.) although it would cost more than buying the DZ.

Ahem, allow me to recommend the SZR660 Laughing its lighter than all the 400's, better handling than the ZXR400 I had, and has a lot more grunt, though struggles after 100 to be honest. 115mph has been seen however Mr. Green

Biggest advantage is that the bike will generally be a lot newer, and cost a lot less Neutral
