Hi All,

I've been riding for a while, but its only the past month or two that I've felt confident enough to filter.

Most of the times where I could filter I'll be going left when I reach the end, whether its a roundabout or lights, so how do I filter down and get into the correct lane? Will cars let me in/across, or do you have to force your way?

I do filter down certain roads, but tend to move in quite a bit before I need to turn.

Any help/suggestions welcome.

Cheers

Kel

I'll normally nip in a couple of cars from the front of the queue ready to turn left. It depends where you see a gap, really. Yes, you do have to fight your way in sometimes - in those cases just be assertive and don't do anything silly and you'll be fine. Thumbs Up

Either make sure you can get right to the front and pull in front of the car there or slot yourself in a bit further back. If you know you're going to be turning left, you should be looking for your space well before you need it.

Worst case, there isn't one and you're left sitting on the outside of a queue of traffic looking like a dick while all the cars drive past looking smug.

I tend to nip in a few cars from the end.
Just today I was filtering down A27 by arundal towards Ports (traffic can be a nightmare) I went to nip in 20 cars from the front as I had a white van man in front trying to get in front of a coach.
A right nightmare, coach driver was not giving up - So I decided to pull in behind him to save any bother that was comming my way Rolling Eyes

Few cars try to stop you getting in so just keep your witts about you Thumbs Up

what ill do if im turning left, is pull to the left of a gap of the car behind of the car infront of the que. Put my left indicator on. Or when the traffic starts moving just slip in. Of course always do the neccesary shoulder checks and mirror checks before doing this as some car drivers wont open up to you.

Sorry for the shitty drawing but heres what ill do when waiting to turn left in none moving traffic!

Whenever I want to turn left I just pull in a couple of cars before getting to the end of the line, if all cars are stationary I stop by the biggest gap I can see and just go for getting in, usually the car behind will let you through, they might not be happy with you but I've never had someone try to force me out.

Well I had a bus the other day try to close the gap as much as possible.. but I out accelerated him so it was no problem (wasn't hard;))

If its at lights and I know I'm going to reach the end before they go green I just go to the front of the que, as long as there is a light further ahead I can watch obviously Razz

I find that cars usually let me in if I have my indicator on, look at the driver and raise my hand in a stop sign. When they let me in, I give them a nod and a wave. This works even with the aggressive drivers of Central London. Thumbs Up

Why don't you filter on the left?

I wouldn't. I don't fancy riding in the gutter with the drains, pushbikes, passengers getting out of cars and the general litter that gets pushed to the side of the road! I only tend to filter on the left when there's been another lane to do it in.

Thanks for all your replies, they seem to confirm what I had been thinking.

Matthab - That picture demonstrates the point quite well, so cheers for making the effort! Very Happy

I thought that as its a single lane of traffic this would be classed as undertaking rather than filtering. That and I don't want to be in the gutter on this particluar road as I think I'd be forced onto the grass verge.

Having said that, what is the general opinion on filtering down the left hand side of a single lane of non-moving traffic?

just wait for cars setting off, usually leaves a gap where the next car hasn't moved yet, so slot into that Twisted Evil or just assertively integrate yourself Wink

I'd say you're more likely to get clipped by someone - they'd be more wary of pulling out to the right into a lane of oncoming traffic than to the left where they might not be expecting it. That said, I do filter on the left for short distances (eg between bus lanes) occasionally despite the fact I know I probably shouldn't, just keep aware.

As far as roundabouts go, if you're 'trapped' at the front wanting to turn left, just go all the way round.

Not a good idea. If the car to your left moves in, you've got nowhere to go, as you're trapped against the kerb. All it takes is another biker filtering to his right and he's going to swerve out of the way straight into you. Potential consequences don't bear thinking about.

You also get less warning about pedestrians stepping into the road.

When you're filtering, make sure you've got a way out. Thumbs Up

Well your average car driver won't be expecting you on the right hand side, even less the left hand side. Cars tend to be leftward in their lanes in traffic I've notice, so theres less room to push through.

You can often force cars to let you through if you ride a bit in the on coming lane if you need it, you can't force a kerb out the way Wink

Only place I'd consider it would be on a dual carriage way or motorway just before my turn off, but then that would be using the hard shoulder, which isn't exactly the most legal manoeuvre in the world.
