I was wondering, on the test roughly how much space do they give you to do a U-turn in?

Depends on what ure riding.
they give a bit more room on a 500.
practice in a car park,i can get a cb500 round in 2and a half car park spaces, the key to doing it is to look around to where you want the bike to be after a uturn and then a few good feet more.

My technique is to clutch-control it half way, and then pull in the clutch and coast the remaining distance...

But each to their own...the important thing is to look at where you want to end up...don't look straight ahead!

how does the clutch help in a U turn

i dont ride a geared bike so i have little or no understanding the functions of a clutch

apart from is disengages the engine from the drive, so you can change the gear

You'll learn all about the wonders of the clutch in your CBT/test preparation...

Basically, for low-speed maneouvers, you need to "ride the clutch" (that's the car term innit?...can't remember what the bike term is)...so, you either keep blipping the throttle, or keep it at constant revs, and only release the clutch when you need a little power...

...I can't understand what I've just written there, so please feel free to ignore it!...but everything will become clear in your training...

Basically, you need to keep the revs up but not go too fast. So we pull the clutch in a bit, so it is only just engaging. A U turn is a lot harder without the clutch :S

Try it on your ped - First try and do a U turn on full lock, using just the throttle. Then try it again pulling the back brake on slightly, and giving it more revs

In my CBT I was told to use the clutch with the back brake controlling the speed... for my test I was told I should do manuvers without the backbrake (just clutch & throttle)... which was confusing as I practised the back brake method loads, before doing my DAS training.

I have to agree with u there I always use my feet to control my bike when im parking /moving tightly.

I had my first lesson yesterday (3 hours!) and on the U turn u:
do a rear observation (lifesaver to the right)
keep ur haed in kinda that direction
then use clucth control to move round to where ur looking
if ur going to fast u feather the rear brake
Then when uve got to the other side do another rear observation b4 setting off into the middle of the road

How stupid is it riding properly as well eh? they say the only time ur supposed to use ur front brake is in an emergency stop all other times u depend on the rear brake and engine braking, fucking CG125s I hate em. Mine was vibrating so much the mirrors kept sagging
