Hi folks, Im thinking of getting an R1, and was really taken by the styling of the 04 - 06 model with the underseat exhaust....however its a shit load of dosh to spend so was wondering if anyone can tempt me with their earlier R1?
Most of them on ebay dont look as hot as the 04 on ones, but if you have any nice pics of yours and reasons why they are a good buy then post up, especially if you have upgraded from the earlier to the 04 + ones.
Oh aye, lets not have all the 98 jokes, Im not getting one just to avoid them

I've not had an 04 onward R1, but they are beautiful bits of kit.
The 98 model I had for over two years gave me the best pre trackday riding years in my life so far. Too skittery for some, I loved the rawness and feel that the bike was actually alive. The life in the bike makes you respect it, and if you respect the bike, it will respect you.
I regret part chopping it for a later 03 model, mostly because of the 3K I lost when I binned the new one 6 months later in a highside, I got way too cocky with it, ignored the signs and she bit me in the ass. The later fuel injected bike still retained the raw feel, but you could feel the benefit of five years development in the power delivery and tighter handling.
After that crash I must have hit my head harder than I thought, because I went out and bought an RRY blade whilst still in cast, big mistake. When I got back to riding and regained strength in my wrist, I absolutley hated it. There was nothing bad about it, much comfier than either R1, down on power but capable enough and handled very well; it's just like I felt I was riding on it rather than with it. Anyway after feeling like I didn't want to ride again I ditched the blade and got another later R1 in the best colours and loved it, I was alive again! ____________________ Part-time GSXR1000 pilot>Micron Serpert system+K&N, PC111, Sigma slipper clutch, Brembo m/c+Galfer discs, Gilles rearsets, Translogic Quickshifter.

Well ive had a 98...At the time was young and inexperienced and it scared the shit out of me, so I sold it a fortnight later, do it if you thinks you can handle it.
01 plate pretty much the same but not so much torque on the pull off, would have kept it if not for theives
03 plate, first of the fuel injected....possibly the nicest bike to look at that ive owned responds to everything at the rate you put it in unlike mr 98, dont put dunlop sportmaxes on them....shockingly shit!.....written off in a smidsy...gutted.
another 03 plate....same as above, this was from insurance money....nicked a week later..............can you tell i'm having bad luck at this point, wasnt insured so no payout either.
04 plate and current bike. Faultless. Pilot powers are worth their weight in gold though wear pretty quickly when wheelying a lot.
In comparision to the pre 03 bikes its such a refined beast, youd really think they hadnt come from the same line! Comfy as a sportsbike can be though being 6'3" i would advise adjustable rearsets. Going for the option of a standard screen is simply out of the question, unless you enjoy a stiff breeze. Not as rapid as the earlier bike from first through to third but from there you hit the "zone" youll see what i mean.
People ofter say the bodywork isnt up to par however as yet havent had a problem(since october anyway and i ride all weather) Change the underseats.... the standards..... meh. headlights are great though the standards on the 98 are pretty poo from what I can remember. Ahh... i might as well too!
Ive never had a go on the 98 one but i really wanna.
Mines a 00 R1 and is as fast as shit and scares me too!
But it handles nice but ive found that the gsxr 1000 k1 & k4 handle better and are worringly fast but those ones petrify me and i dont like feeling soft lumps between my bum and the bike seat due to me shitting myself cos of fear!
Ive had a go on an 04 R1 and it felt like it had a lot less torque compared to mine lower down the rev range between 2000rpm and 6000rpm, but was still fast as heck!
Ive never tried the 02 R1 the 5pw model im still begging my mate to let me have a go but after i wheelied his gsxr600k3 last year up in Purley way hes never forgiven me, i guess seeing someone else wheelie your baby why youve never done leaves a man bitter?
In all respect all the R1's are great but the advantage you have on the new ones such as 04 & 07 are that they are easier to tune and adjust via PCM3 just plug in and plug into laptop and its done, whereas the 98 R1 & 00 R1 will need dyno jet kits and a dino run to set up properly.
But i will say that the Suzuki GSXR1000 are faster and better handling from my road riding experience with them and they again i say left be petrieifed!
If you get an older R1 say 98 or 00 you will not be disappointed, if you are it will be because you bought a lemon as many have been binned and badly repaired, it took me a while and some reasearch for me to find my one.
Also its so bloody easy to get parts off ebay and breakers for the 98 & 00 R1 whereas the others are a bit more difficult and expensive!
If you do get an earlier R1 like 98 or 00 the two bikes have very different body work although they look identical to the untrained eye.
The 98 has a different nose cone, rear seat cowl, screen, clocks, and had some recall work done it which can be seen by looking at the frame number on the frame where there will be two different punch hole dots, one in front of the numbers and one on top of the numbers.
Also the 00 R1 has a few improvements on the internal components inside the engine.
Good luck and the best thing would be to get a test ride on each model before you make up your mind the difference in torque on old R1's to the new R1's is very noticeable.
As they say which i have found to be true R1 has become more tame and civilised with age, is that what you want? ____________________ Elen sila lummen omentielvo! |

I'm afraid I would have to say that if you can afford an 06 R1 then you should at least test one against an 06 Blade and buy the Blade because it's the better bike. I think the R1 is a great looking machine and it's a nice enough bike to ride but it's trying to be a Blade and it doesn't do the job as well. I traded my 05 R1 after 6 months and in hindsight should have moved straight to the Honda.
All this is IMO of course, but try the Blade. |

Here's my 03 R1, I'm doing more on the performance then looks. Not the best picture of it though.
To me the 02-03 R1 is the best looking of them.
Its been a good bike so far, I commute to work on it everyday and I have no complaints so far. The bushes have gone in the forks so handling isn't at its best at the moment but it'll be getting sorted out soon and a nice pair of ohlins springs are going in.
I've not ridden any older R1's but I have ridden an FZ1 which has a detuned 04 onwards R1 engine. I wasn't too impressed with it, but then again is probably the way they set it up for the FZ1. |

Hey thanks guys for all your info, the pics are great!
Im not really sure what to do, its always hard to find a good bike thats the right price, especially with ebay being full of scamming shits! I cant believe the number of dodgy listings for R1's there are!
Anyway Im really after the 04 + R1 because of the weight and the seat height. I had a sit on one and it was sooo much lower and lighter than my bike I couldnt believe it. Im not sure how the older ones compare.
As for the honda, well I do like the look of it and Im sure it competes on performance, but being into design I find it hard to own a bike that doesnt do it visually as well as on performance.......the honda's rear end looks a bit like a donkey thats just given birth
I quite like the idea of an earlier one tho, trying to mimic the later ones

tis got a mini micron hidden under the fairing, like the streetfighter one,
I'll keep yah posted anyways |

I love my R1, 02 model, awesome performance... There are more powerful for sure, but its got all i need.. It'll wheelie at will, handles great, but for our roads... A steering damper is a must! Its made mine so much more usable more of the time. And it still looks good next to the latest bikes..
It can be a little hard on the wrists if your just chugging around, but thats not often!
You certainly wont be disappointed. ____________________ TS50ER + big bore kit n pipe, TZR125 with pv kit, TSX125, KR1S, ZX7R, R1... |
