Is it illegal to ride with a broken indicator?
The light works but the orange cover has broken off.

It's illegal if it is just a flashing white light with no lense. Use your arm signals.

Technically what you should do is tape up all the indicators and use hand signals until you get a replacement.

Or buy a bottle of fanta orange and tape the lid over the top of the bulb, Just needs to be an orange light. A mate of mines bike passed its MOT with a rear position light consisting of a 10W bulb with a red coca cola bottle cap stuck over it (admittedly quite an old bike).

The cops could pull you for it and demand it is repaired by a garage and you are then required to report to a police station with a letter from the workshop saying it is repaired .
Expensive and time consuming IMHO. Sort it out quick.

when I was chased and pulled by traffic cops last night(excessive speed apparantly Embarassed couldn't catch up in time to get a reading), they didn't care about my lack of a rear left indicator, more concerned about me being legal, there were just two wires where it should have been(snapped when I dropped it) but they let me go regardless with a "ride safe"

I don't know if it would pass a detailed DVLA inspection because it's not E marked but all the coppers are worried about is you showing an orange light which is visible and flashes at the right speed.

it was certainly legal for my mates tail light becaue the regs for a bike of that ones age just state it must show a steady, red light.

As I said. If it were me I'd just tape them up and use handsignals. I often just use handsignals anyway, comes from years of owning bikes with absent or highly unreliable flashers.

I thought an indicator was ok as long as it didn't show any white light, just orange?

My front right indicator is currently made of the remnants of the old lens and some kind of see through water proof orange tape my dad gave me, it works.

The question you should ask yourself is "what do I need to do to make sure I'm safe". Leaving just the white bulb is technically illegal, but it's better than nothing. Or you can use arm signals - I did this when my indicator bulb blew recently (although arm signals aren't all that effective in the dark Rolling Eyes ).

If you are stopped by the Police, then as long as you can provide a reasonable explanation, you are unlikely to be penalised for it. Accidents do happen, and bulbs do fail.

Get it replaced as soon as you can, but fitting an orange coloured bulb will do until you can get a replacement lens.

in the eyes of the law and mot,any light that is fitted must work,it must also be of the appropriate colour ie shows no white light to the rear (including number plate light)the indicators should also flash at between 60-120 per minute, must also have a tell tale unless the light is visible from the riding position.
i had an indicator broken off in a pub carpark and was lucky that i carry a roll of insulation tape and just taped over the indicators!
