Does anyone know of this roundabout? If you have encountered any road safety issues here (signs unclear, not enough warnings of the roundabout or to slow down etc) I would be most interested to hear from you. My son is lucky not to have lost a leg on that junction. He'll not ride a bike again for some time if ever. I would like to know if you think it warrants more attention in terms of markings and chevrons etc.

many thanks

OK, I know its early but I am hoping that someone out there will be able to help. God forbid you should be the next one to have an accident there. A young man on a motorcycle died on the same junction a day before my son's accident. Another person is still in intensive care from an accident there a week before. Think about it. If you know the place please get in touch.

Got any approach pictures?

I'll go take some in a bit, its a fast dual carriageway running up hill with a roundabout hidden at the top over a brow.

If this is the guy I'm thinking about he went straight over the roundabout hitting the road signs on it and his bike landed on the other side in. See diagram.

(note this is purely speculation based on where I saw the bike and the skidmarks on the road)

reply 1 - He rode a blue Suzuki. He's got to have a frame on his femur to stretch the healthy bone into his thigh. He lost a 6 inch chunk of thigh bone and this is the only option apart from amputation. 2 year treatment.

reply 2

I have some pics of the approach but I don't know how to insert a picture

thanks to both of you for responding. it is very much appreciated.[/img]

I think that might be the one the day before my son's accident. The chevrons on the roudabout were already out when he came off. Police say he'd be dead if they'd been there but I think maybe he'd have had a better chance of seeing the roundabaout if they'd been replaced - who can be sure.

Christ, I didn't realise there was more than one accident. I ride that road 4 times a day thought I would have seen it Exclamation Well i hope his treatment goes OK.

I've taken some pics of the area anyway for interested peeps who want to comment;

thanks for those pics. They will, perhaps, help people who don't know the name of the roundabout to recognise it and provide their opinion of the signage.

No a problem, it's only 30 seconds from my house so no biggie Thumbs Up

As a personal note it is a bit of an awkward roundabout and because it's on such long fast road and so well hidden it can catch you out. This is only made worse because the road hooks to the left before you join it.

I've seen plenty of bikers panic and stand their bike up and near go over it. Could definitely benefit from some more signage i think.

Thats exactly what the issue was on the evening of Lee's accident. He hit the kerb as it hooked to the left and somersaulted over across towards the roundabaout.

On the face of it I'd say it definitely needs more signage. So, further back, theres no warnings or signposts to say theres a roundabout coming up?

Only warning indications I can see from those pics are the long white lines on the 2nd photo. I suppose there are other hints, such as the bollards etc, but hard to tell if these would be visible on the carriageway itself. If the chevrons were there it would have provided much better visibility in my opinion, at least looking at it from those angles.

There's one sign - a green directions sign - that indicates a roundabaout. Several people have been to look seen that it was partially obscured by foliage for 2 or three days after the accident, especially if a breeze was blowing in the direction of the road making the obscurity worse if not complete. I went to have a further look yesterday and (as one would expect) the bushes have been trimmed back.

Doesn't help that the accident was in the evening on a dull, overclouded day making it more difficult to see the curve in the road which was hidden by a slight brow in the incline of the road in any case.

Its a long approach - no yellow rumble lines (is that the right term?) or any other indication clearly visible from the approach.

thanks very much! that might be of use if we decide to take things further than a complaint about road signs.

Just reminding anyone who's just logged on about this incident and asking for any input you might think helpful. I am definitely going to make an application to Barnsley council to have more warning signs erected on this location but anyone else doing the same thing might move them along a bit faster.

cheers
