For the last two and a half years I have been building my mate John a 1955 (ish) Ariel HS Scrambler from a big pile of scrap bits and pieces that he has collected over the years.
I spent the day getting the last problems sorted out and can find no reason why I should not put some petrol in her and give her a go so in the morning I will wheel her out of my living room and hear her come to life.

Bloody ell. Thats an old girl!
Sort of thing my Granddad is into. He is retired now and just does nut/bolt rebuilds on classic bikes he picks up from auto jumbles.

His personal favorite is his Norton commando 750.
Not entirely my cup of tea, But I can appreciate the amount of care and work which has been put into it.

Any chance of a Video of the beast Running Ariel?

I have only run it for around 10 seconds so far. I only quickly tested it and the proper check over is tomorrow

For the last 30 months I have been trying to covert a pile of scrap metal
that John M***** dumped at my house into an Ariel HS for him. it has not
been an easy rebuild (it is not even a rebuild as the bits had never
actually been a bike) and many times I wished that I had never started the
job. It has been a love hate affair with long periods of hate dominating.
Ten months or so John told me that there was no rush to finish the job, this
was just the incentive I needed to stop work altogether. This weekend I
decided to have a bit of a go at her and complete all those niggly little
jobs that I had been putting off. A couple of late nights and a few more
bits of frustration saw me looking at her in my living room at lunch time
today wondering what more needed doing.
The only real job was to get an MOT, rather than do it over the phone I
decided it was best to take her to the shop so I wheeled her out into the
sunlight of Small Heath and drained a gallon of petrol from my NH and tried
to start her. First kick she fired back and both hurt my leg and caused a
group of small Pakistani boys to become excited. Subsequent kicks caused a
few more kick backs and she eventually caught but with far too much
throttle. A spot of adjustment to the huge GP carb and she fired second
kick, a quick check proved the oil was returning, I showed young Ishmael
how to blip the throttle and ran inside for a crash hat and jacket. Ishy
kept her on a fast tick over and once I had my riding gear on I took control
and pushed her off the stand and stalled her. She fired up again first kick
and I set off enjoying the sheer music of the exhaust note from the open
pipe roaring on acceleration and twittering when the right hand is backed
off. I circled the block at the bike shop three times until P**e O****w came
out to look at what was making all the noise. A touch of fettling on the
brakes and she now has an MOT. I have to keep reminding myself that ..
1. I am running her in.
2. she is not mine.
However it is not possible to be a good boy on her, she just cries out for
huge hand fulls of throttle and responds like silk to it pulling away evenly
with no reticence. When a car dared to get in my way I could not help giving
her some and taking him on the wrong side of the road over a speed-bump.
I said that it has been love hate,
Today was all love.
Wali

Stick with the standard Jamie, black does not show stains.

I would expect the engine on the HS to last 10000 miles before a major top end job and the bottom end should last 50000 miles. I rebuilt the gearbox totaly and that is good for 100000.
I want to keep her for ever but she is not mine. I know I will be temped to work her hard and she will get battle scared so it is best that John gets her back before I mistreat her. She will leave a big hole in my life though.
