It seems every person here with a few exceptions rides a sport bike instead of a cruiser. A curious mind and cruiser fan wants to know, why do you prefer your sport-street bike?

I would like nothing more than to drop a proper sports bike engine into a proper dedicated hard tailed chop frame, with great big fuck off ape hangers on it Mr. Green

Why do you like riding a cruiser? Thinking Wink

At a guess i'd say its down to what people want out of their bike (but this is utterly different for everyone)

sports bikes are for going fast and frightening the poop out of yourself where possible, even at the expense of comfort, userfriendlyness and.. er expense.. e.t.c.

cruisers are more a cruiseing about, takeing in the scenery and being shiney, but occasionally seeing off the odd scooby from the lights.

(mr.z who rides neither, hasn't and isn't likely to)

The whole this is better than argument is bollocks, always has been, it depends entirely what you want out of the bike, i have to say what others think of my bike is very low on the priority list indeed.

"easier to maintain"

How so? Thinking

To be honest, I find them bland and samey.

Same goes for cruisers on the whole.

I like to see something with a bit of character, most sports bikes and cruisers have none.

Yes, I know I ride a VFR but at least it's a V4 rather than an inline motor. I wouldn't say I love it though. It does its job very well but I couldn't say I get a thrill off it, I get a thrill from what it does but not from the bike itself.

Different people see biking as very different things.

I try not to see my bike as a mode of transport, and instead see it as a "Sport" or a "Hobby". When I take the bike out, I have no destination as such. I just ride where I feel. Weather that be chasing the blue sky and Cloud dodging. Or just damn right posing.

Basically I don't want to put myself off biking. If I use it daily to and from work, day in, day out. When a ride out comes up, Im going to be in two minds weather I can be bothered to go or not.

Thats my thoughts anyway. I AM a fair weather biker.

Typical Power ranger. Laughing

And I like it! Cool

I never thought a Sport Bike would be comfortable. I know they must be or they'd never sell, but I can't seem to see it that way. In fact I've never ridden one. I bought a cruiser because, well, I want to cruise. I didn't think a sport bike with some screaming high RPM engine and the seemingly tense hunched forward position would suit going state to state (I'm in the USA).

What kind of differences make a sport bike have "better handling"? I've seen the turn radius on Suzuki sport bikes (hardly any) and would never imagine teaming one up with the phrase "better handling"

My dad's Honda CL350 acts a lot like one. I love it. With it's light weight, straighter handlebars, and higher softer suspension it handles like a breeze. Put my chopper in the grass on rough terrain and you feel everything.

Never been interested in sportsbikes. Always had a fondness for cruisers though.

As it stands at the moment, I need an exceptional 'multi-purpose' bike. Hence the BMW GS. And the XT takes up the slack through winter.

However, should the chance to add a third bike to the garage ever come up, it'll definitely be a cruiser of some description. Smile

What i find rather odd, is that the majority of people to reply to this thread don't seem to own sportsbikes!
From peoples sigs/comments we have:
VFr750
Thundercat
CBR600F
GSXR400
FMX650
GSXR750 (me)

IMHO, it's only the 2 Gixers that are your actual proper 'sportsbikes' - all the others are a bit slow/lardy/shit.
Very Happy
(runs for cover)

@ Ravo - there's a little bit more to it than just U-turns. At a guess, i reckon my car could easily out U-turn an F1 car, doesn't mean it will be faster round a track though.

Better suspension, more rigid frame, better tyres, vastly shorter wheel base, better clearances allowing high amounts of lean, better balancing of weight and overall lower weight to power, being able to carry far more speed through corners, the list goes on..

So... er.. everything

But if you spend most of the time going in straight lines what's the point.... thing is there's so many bikes in between.. i'd not get a cruiser for comfy myself, but it'd be higher up on the list than a small sports bike, but then roads are quite different here..

edit: Honda CL350 is on my list of bikes i need to own at some point Thumbs Up

Sports bikes offer me something physical a car (with it's advantages) offer, a cruiser seems to only offer the looks, which isn't something I'm into.

Less weight, better rake/trail for quicker turning, better ground clearance, better choice of tyres.
For me 'better' means safer/can do it faster and more smoothly.

You are limited in very tight turns, but even on narrow UK roads I never find this a problem.

Looks like they fit the description of a sport bike from that site. If they aren't sport bikes, what are they? And, what are your guy's take on the term "crotch rocket"? I don't hear it used at all on this forum, but around home town I hear it all the time. Is it derogative or something?

Who says that riding a cruiser means you don't need leg protection? You're just as likely to lose all your skin on a cruiser if you were in an accident. And on the flip side, not everyone wears leathers on a sports bike either; many just wear jeans and a leather jacket. Also my leathers are completely black, thanks very much.

Get hold of an early slabside GSXR1100. Character and horsepower in spades!

I like sports bikes for a nice surplus of power mainly.

Imagine a RG1100, thats what its like, lovely powerband kick! Frame is borderline enough to make it intersting and they are beautifully simple to work on.

Another s/moto vote here.
Sportsbikes are nice, but there's something great about being able to have so much fun on a bike that you're laughing into your helmet without fear of disintegration into the ground should you come off.
